At first, NYPD Detective Carolina Quinn seems concerned only in Electra’s details of finding the body. Then the interest grows intensely professional…and personal.

Why would the police think Electra had a motive for murder? She had no personal interaction with Dean Johnson. But his wife was no stranger to the Down Under, and Detective Quinn is extremely curious about every detail of Electra’s other life.

Pleasures abound in this sexy third novel from Emma Prez.
By Catriona Esquibel
Great fun! Professor Electra Campos is smart, sexy, with a weakness for the ladies. And her most dreadful dean has dropped dead (with a little help). Electra is an obvious suspect, and she gets involved with proving her innocence (with a little "Prove it on me Blues.") This novel is packed (pun intended) with action (pun intended). It's an academic murder mystery whose appeal will extend far beyond academics. Electra and her side-kick Adrin have me laughing and shaking my head (and wanting to shake them!). From "Greek tragedy was in my blood" to "I pulled her thong from my coat pocket," pleasures abound in this sexy third novel from Emma Prez.

A very enjoyable debut novel!
By RLynne
Electra's Complex is "A Bella After Dark Erotic, Romantic Mystery. Electra Campos is an English professor at Capital College in New York City. Getting to campus very early, to turn in paperwork to the dean, she discovers his body in a pool of his blood. What follows is a very funny mystery with some great, off beat characters. There is also plenty of sex, and a fun flirtation between Electra and NYPD Detective Carolina Quinn.
Edited by award winning Kathering V. Forrest, Electra's Complex is a very good debut novel.

Excellent erotic murder mystery that will keep you on your toes
By Tara from The Lesbian Review
I had no idea what I was getting into with this book, but it was a wild ride. I've shelved it as erotic, and it is, but there is absolutely no romance to this book. It's a murder mystery where one of the potential suspects is also investigating the murder to the best of her ability. There's a lot of sex with multiple partners, but all of it ratchets up the tension.

I'm typically not a mystery person at all, but I'm so glad I read this. If you want something different, be sure to check it out.

By Gene Kahn
It is a useful book for A & P mechanics to get a feel for electrical things. But there are errors in the book. For example, in the section titled "Combining Resistance, Capacitance, and Inductance" he states "In a dc circuit frequency (F) is equal to 0; therefore, XL and XC are also equal to zero." Well, HALF right. XL is zero, but XC goes to INFINITY, from his own formula: XC = 1 / 2*pi*f*C as any algebra student can see. Things like this can cause some students a lot of consternation!

From Publishers Weekly
Written before Darren O'Shaughnessy became a bestselling young adult author as Darren Shan, this gory companion to June 2010's Procession of the Dead is a twisting, paranormal gangster mystery. Al "Algiers" Jeery works for the Cardinal, crime boss of the City. When Al's new girlfriend, Nic, is brutally murdered in one of the Cardinal's hotels, the boss asks Al to investigate. Al dutifully starts researching and quickly learns he knew nothing about Nic. Blind Incan priests, Nic's weird friends, and the terrifying assassin Paucar Wami conspire as Al's life unravels along with the mystery. Events occur in parallel to those of Procession of the Dead, but the stories are quite independent. Readers familiar with Shan's teen titles might need to exercise a bit of patience with the pacing, but fans of dark urban fantasy will eagerly look forward toward City of Snakes, the next installment. From Booklist
Shan’s second book about the City takes place during roughly the same time period as the first (Procession of the Dead, 2010) but features many new characters, only tying together events from both books at the very end of the story. Al Jeery is a dedicated soldier for the Cardinal and happy to do his job until the day he takes a body to the morgue only to discover it is his girlfriend. Asked by the Cardinal to investigate, Al takes on the duty, persevering through a complex and often seemingly impossible investigation. Like Procession of the Dead, this story takes place entirely within Shan’s fictional yet modern-day city, run by the Cardinal, but the plot is constructed in the fashion of a mainstream police procedural. With almost too many twists to believe, dozens of characters, and the complex mythology of the City itself, Hell’s Horizon is not an easy read, yet it may appeal to those who enjoyed China Miville’s The City & the City. --Jessica Moyer

Review
Praise for Procession of the Dead: 'A beguiling read ! a fantastic revelation at the end' SFX 'Explicit, brutal fantasy ! the narrative voice is engagingly cocky and the action races along' The Times

Great Book #2 in the series
By Dave Edmiston
If you're a Darren Shan fan, you won't be disappointed. Just be forewarned that this is an adult series, not like his other YA series (plural).

This book caught me off guard. Usually when some time has passed between my reading book n in a series and then n+1, I go back and flip through the previous one as a refresher. But I started this one on a trip and didn't have a chance to look at the previous one. The events in this book confused me at first. I finally just gave up trying to connect the events in book 1 to the events in this second book.

SHAN PULLS A FAST ONE

It takes a long time, but the reader finally learns that this book is not a sequel to the previous book. This second book actually takes place at the same time as the first story. It wouldn't quite work to read these books out of sequence, because the first book sets up the scene so well. So book one and book two take place in parallel timelines until they finally tie at the end of book two, setting the stage for the third and final book in the series.

So what happens in this book?

I'm not telling. That's the real fun of these books.

The scenario is the same mobbed up underworld as Procession of the Dead: 1 (The City). The characters are similar, but different. But Shan's world tip-toes on the line between realism and fantasy.

If you read book one (The City) and didn't like it, then please don't bother with this one, because it's more of the same. But if you liked Procession of the Dead, then you won't be disappointed--maybe confused like me, but not disappointed. One good indicator is the fact that the reviews were so mixed (or actually pretty critical) for Procession of the Dead, but they're generally positive for this second book. So use your opinion of book one to indicate whether you'll like the second & third books in the series.

Absolutely Fantastic!
By Nicola Mansfield
This is an adult book, make no mistake.

The summary of this book is going to be very hard to understand if you haven't read the first book. You can read my review of Procession of the Dead for a fuller understanding of the story without any spoilers. This second book starts off with completely different characters within The Cardinal's Troops, his own personal police/security force. The plot runs parallel with the first novel with very few crossover's until the end. The theme centers around a vicious killing of a young woman and Al Jeery, Troop member, is personally assigned, by The Cardinal himself, to solve the case. The case becomes personal to Jeery as he finds loved ones crossing paths with his investigation. This book also delves deeper into the mysterious Incan group of blind men in white robes, has more of a mystical element to it and centers on the mysterious but feared and dreaded hitman/killer/torturer Paucar Wami first met in book one.

A quick-paced read that ultimately reads like a mystery thriller for 3/4s of the book. Second books in trilogies are always compared to the first as we have expectations set up for us and while I certainly do describe this as a dark, violent urban fantasy, I found this not as dark, not as mafioso, not as violent (but don't get me wrong it is plenty violent!). Comparisons aside, this was a fantastic read, the mystery angle really shocked me having read a lot of Shan's books I didn't expect that angle coming from him. It was very well done. The characters are just as eccentric, as expected, from the victim's cross-dressing rich brother to the octogenarian pimp who always knows the word on the street. Those characters make it sound seedy but it's not, I don't remember any s*x scenes at all!

I'm hardly doing the book justice as it is just such an intricate book and since it runs parallel with the first one there are crossovers which are infrequent to start off with but rush to a head at the end. Now that I have read the final words of book one and the final words of book two, I just can't wait for the two to meet up with each other in the final book, City of the Snakes, due Mar. 2010 in UK, which means a month or so later for me here in Canada. Review originally written May 4, 2009.

A Well-Done, Challenging Crime Thriller
By Bookreporter
With the release of the first installment of The City series, adult readers have been inaugurated into Darren Shan's peculiar, dark sense of humor. This bestselling author has a talent for creating the grungiest, vilest, most abominable human beings imaginable and somehow making them interesting and even relatable (in certain cases). His twisted plots and depraved humor give his books a distinctive flavor that is different from other works and ends up being a welcome change.

This second book follows PROCESSION OF THE DEAD, unfolding on a parallel timeline and spotlighting many of the main characters in the first book. The likable Al Jeery is a new protagonist, a servant to the monstrous gangster known simply as "The Cardinal." We return to the disturbing territory of this crime boss, a man who has never left "The City" for long. His territory is a peculiar organism whose dirty streets have become breeding grounds for the worst kind of scum. Hoods, lackeys, crooked cops and street maidens consort and sully every corner, hotel, restaurant and alley, all while worshipping and living in fear of the world's most powerful man.

The Cardinal's dreamlike City is somehow unbreakable, an odd monument to his fantastic and supreme power. It is tied so closely with the man as to make one wonder if he could even exist outside it. Mysterious and merciless, the Cardinal focuses only on his empire and the scope of his power, removing any challengers and leaving his associates without any evidence of their existence. Before long, it's clear that the Cardinal somehow possesses indistinct and unworldly abilities, the power to predict and control the world around him down to the last detail. His gifts somehow relate back to a group called the Ayuamarca and to the Incan priests who wander blindly through the streets. They are the ancient remains of a civilization that has managed to survive within the confines of a seedy and fiendish place.

Whereas the Cardinal and his understudy, Capac Raimi, had been the main characters in the first installment, Al Jeery is the center of this second one and seems a much more human (or at least a less threatening) sort. The Cardinal has berated him before for his human weakness and for lacking the ambition that those in power generally possess. What Jeery does possess is some unexplained ability to heal people when he chooses, and after receiving his recent promotion because of the Cardinal's misgivings about a murder, Jeery begins the long and difficult process of tracking down her killer and discovering the truth. In pursing this, he encounters some disturbing individuals, the scariest being the sadistic serial killer and assassin Paucar Wami. Unbeknowst to Jeery, Wami has ties to him that have been kept secret and land him in danger even while helping him uncover the mystery.

Though Shan's series is a crime thriller at its heart, there are many elements of horror and fantasy in it. Both installments employ elements of the supernatural, and Shan is careful to keep these consistent with the story and in keeping with the dark tone. The mystery is quite well done, and even practiced readers of mysteries will find guesswork about plotlines extremely challenging. This is one of the many reasons why Shan's books are so worth reading. Audiences will be surprised by the end over how much they'll look forward to reading the final installment --- which, by the way, you won't have to wait too long for, as CITY OF SNAKES releases in June.

The Changeling, by Kenzaburo Oe

Oe introduces Kogito Choko, a writer in his early sixties, as he rekindles a childhood friendship with his estranged brother-in-law, the renowned filmmaker Goro Hanawa. Goro sends Kogito a trunk of tapes he has recorded of reflections about their friendship, but as Kogito is listening one night, he hears something odd. "I'm going to head over to the Other Side now," Goro says, and then Kogito hears a loud thud. After a moment of silence, Goro's voice continues: "But don't worry, I'm not going to stop communicating with you." Moments later, Kogito's wife rushes in; Goro has jumped to his death. With that, Kogito begins a far-ranging search to understand what drove his brother-in-law to suicide. His quest takes him from the forests of southern Japan to the washed-out streets of Berlin, where Kogito confronts the ghosts from his own past and that of his lifelong, but departed, friend.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In 1997, Juzo Itami, one of Japan's most successful film directors, jumped to his death in Tokyo. Nobel laureate Oe (Hiroshima Notes) was Itami's brother-in-law, and he transposes Itami's suicide, under a fictional disguise, into a dazzling and elaborate maze of memories and meditations centering on the suicide of film director Goro Hanawa. Goro has made a series of tapes for Kogito, his world-famous writer brother-in-law, as groundwork for a possible film, which Kogito listens to obsessively after Goro's suicide. To rid himself of Goro's ghost, Kogito travels to Berlin, but even there he runs into pieces of Goro's past. Eventually, the reader is led back to the two men's youthful involvement with a right-wing paramilitary group founded by Kogito's late father. What begins as a weekend spent at the group's camp turns into something sinister from which Goro emerges fundamentally changed. Oe's deft mix of high intellectual reflection and absurd slapstick scenarios is polished to a high gloss, giving this book a tone that may remind American readers of Saul Bellow's Humboldt's Gift. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Japan’s greatest living novelist has brought the autobiographical novel and the roman clef to the highest artistic distinction by merging them. His and his family and friends’ thoughts and doings are nearly always the stuff of his novels. This book opens with Kogito, a distinguished novelist, listening to audiocassettes just sent him by his oldest friend, Goro, a filmmaker. After his pal says he’s going to head over to the Other Side now, there is a loud thud on the tape. Goro’s voice returns, saying he won’t stop communicating with Kogito. Then Kogito’s wife interrupts to tell him that Goro has committed suicide by jumping off a roof. (Oe and Juzo Itami, whose Tampopo was an international hit, were longtime friends, and the latter’s 1997 death was identical to Goro’s.) Communication does continue, first as Kogito vocally responds to the tapes, then in memory while the novelist undertakes a guest lectureship in Berlin, where he meets Goro’s chaste, last young lover. The ghostly colloquy gradually focuses on an incident the friends shared as late teenagers in the sticks where Kogito grew up. As in previous novels and with comparable mastery, Oe deeply ponders love, sex, art, friendship, family, and death in a rich, psychologically acute rhapsody of narration anchored in personal calamities. This one ends with a willfully upbeat line by Oe’s fellow Nobelian, Wole Soyinka. --Ray Olson

A Life in Fractals
By Roger Brunyate
Fractal designs, such as used to be popular twenty years ago, have the property that any part of them replicates the whole in miniature. If you zoom in on even the tiniest detail, you can reach an understanding of the entire shape. This analogy occurs to me after reading THE CHANGELING by Kenzaburo Oe, a late work by the Japanese Nobel Laureate, and so far the only thing by him that I have read. Where most novels have a linear narrative behind them, this one reads as a series of one-sided conversations, thoughts about literature and other arts, buried memories, and some bizarre incidents -- all generally minor in themselves, but each seemingly endowed with immense hidden significance, each a clue to some overall design that only gradually emerges as the various details replicate and mirror one another.

Despite its abstract content, the book is easy to read and its framework simple. Kogito Choko, a celebrated writer, is listening to some tapes sent him by his brother-in-law Goro Hanawa, once his childhood friend and now a famous film director. At the end of one of the cassettes, Goro remarks "So anyway, that's it for today -- I'm going to head over to the Other Side now. But don't worry, I'm not going to stop communicating with you." Immediately after, Goro throws himself out of the window of his high building. Kogito (an obsessive thinker, aptly named by his father from the phrase "cogito ergo sum") engages in months of conversation with the dead Goro, playing snatches of the tapes, stopping them for his own response, and then continuing to hear his friend's answer. When his wife suggests he needs to get away, he accepts a guest professorship in Berlin, where Goro had himself lived a few years back.

As an example of Oe's method, take the chapter in which Kogito is being interviewed on television in connection with the Berlin Film Festival. There is a long section about how he gets to the interview, or almost doesn't get to it: crossed wires with the person picking him up, confusion at the hotel where this is taking place, description of the technicians setting up the equipment in the hotel ballroom, the physical arrangement of the chairs, backdrop, camera, monitors, all in obsessive detail. And then, without further preamble, Kogito is shown a number of film clips on the monitor: samurai fighting off a peasant army, and a modern game of rugby football. He recognizes it as scenes from a book he had written, entitled RUGBY MATCH 1860. In the novel, he had used the battle and the game as metaphors, but he intrigued by the decision of these filmmakers to film them literally, with an acute feeling for the Japanese atmosphere. He is told that what he has just seen is the only footage from the project so far shot, but the young filmmakers have run out of money; would he be willing to concede them the rights for free? Kogito's translator warns him that he is being ambushed, but he agrees, and the chapter ends.

The core of this chapter, I believe, lies in one of its smallest details, the samurai film clip. Certain aspects of it reflect other images we encounter involving Kogito's father, who appears to have been something of a philosophical leader of an ultra-right-wing movement opposing the Japanese surrender to the US. Kogito's own politics, on the other hand, are liberal, so perhaps he is the Changeling of the title? (Or one of them, along with Goro.) One begins to see that the whole novel is about change. In the background, there is the reconstruction of Japanese society after defeat. But this is worked out in terms of ideas -- translation between languages, translation of one medium into another (writing into film or opera), and perhaps (as the example above would suggest) the handing over of ideas from one generation to another.

The fractal metaphor works on the personal level as well. From what I can gather, this novel reflects themes from every other book that Oe has written, and these in turn reflect the author's life. His brother-in-law was indeed a famous film director, Juzo Itami, who committed suicide in a similar way. Like the fictional Kogito, Kenzaburo Oe has a son who was born brain-damaged, barely able to communicate in words, but who eventually found success as a composer. All Oe's subsequent novels contain such a character, and the writer has spoken of his aim to give his son a voice denied to him in life. While the composer-son plays a relatively small role here, Oe shifts the relationship back a generation, as Kogito tries to understand the legacy of his own father and the huge changes between the Japan of his time and that of the present. The themes of rebirth and the passing of the torch between generations become clear only at the very end, but after so much mind-play they bring a lovely touch of simple human emotion.

All alone on the Other Side
By H. Schneider
The master is back in grand style. I had given up on Oe as a novelist, after the rather boring previous Somersault. His latest, originally from 2000, but in the translated version copyrighted 2010, is a magnificent hoax, a piece of double talk strewn with traps and resonant with the basso ostinato of relentless self-mockery. I am sure there are even readers who are fooled into thinking that this is a piece of darkness, loaded with the search for the meaning of death. Is there life after death, is there a soul different from the body? Where does it go?

The novel is based on real life events, mainly a brother-in-law's suicide in 1997, but essentially all the way back to WW2.
Oe gives us a self-portrait under the name of Kogito Choko. The hero is a writer of international fame, a brooding man, with a handicapped son (who has turned into a composer). Even Choko's book titles are identical with Oe's. Kogito has most of Oe's life, he comes from a place in the hinterland, surrounded by forests. He had studied French literature, and later, after having become famous, taken teaching assignments in the US and in Germany. He speaks English that is hard to follow. Germany is his second foreign market, after the US. His fame has somewhat subsided, and there are opponents, specially a journalist at home, who likes to attack him viciously. He has a childhood friend, Goro, who has made it in the film world, as an actor and as a director. Goro has made a film of Choko/Oe's `A Quiet Life'. Kogito has married Goro's sister.

The story starts with a bang: the friend/ brother-in-law commits suicide by jumping from a high place. He had previously taken up the habit of sending Kogito cassette tapes with long ranting monologues. Kogito will listen to the tapes at night, and make his own comments. It is a dialogue of sorts. The comments are not sent back. There are 30 tapes.

One day, while listening to a tape, Kogito hears an announcement from Goro that he is now going to the other side, and that he will stay in contact. Then follows a noise like a thud, which Kogito will later call the Terrible Thud. Then he hears Goro say some more words.
Later he learns that the suicide had happened some hours before. From then on, listening and re-listening to the collected tapes becomes an obsession, as does looking for other ways of contact with the friend, who is now assumed lonely on the Other Side.

We learn that Goro had messed with Kogito's life since a long time, setting up hoaxes, with him and also against him. Together they had cooked up the project that Kogito would invent an unknown, unpublished, aging Japanese writer, would publish conversations with him, would start inventing pieces of the man's work, would then let him die and then start editing the man's life work, thus merging into him.

We find that the tapes are full of similar pranks. Kogito is thus manipulated, from the `other side' so to say, into accepting a teaching job in Berlin in the winter 1999/2000. This excursion turns into an expedition into Goro's past, and possibly into the reasons for the suicide.
As the lives of the two men were intertwined for decades, the expedition also leads into Kogito's own past, and beyond that to his father's role as a leader of a short-lived right-wing insurrection which had tried to oppose Japan's surrender. Kogito has made enemies by his literary treatment of this past.
In a ponderous way we are gradually dragged into a literary mystery with a political dimension, where the awareness of time and of causality becomes shaky. The word cogitacious (or cogitational?) does not yet exist, but I propose to admit it to general use for books like this. Or do you believe Oe calls his `hero' `Kogito' for no reason?

The book's language is cogitacious not just in content, but also in style. That requires some getting into. As I don't read Japanese, I can't tell if it is equivalent to Oe's own style. It might well be that Oe builds walls to make it harder for us to enter his hermetic world, or to make us believe that he is serious.
It could also be the translator's fault. Since the text and the story move in the cultural rectangle of Japanese, English, French, and German, we meet quite a few international quotes and names. I am not always convinced that either Oe or his translator has handled all those quite properly. I have noted some cases, but won't bore you with them. They are trifles, but should be removed for a next edition.

A great novel, a true Nabokovian delight, just in time to revive my confidence in contemporary writers. Oe is not done yet. The book picks up on his old themes and works them into his new life story chapter. More should follow.

Unique masterpiece
By Jonathan A. Weiss
Kenzuboro Oe deserved the Nobel prize but is a very erratic writer with some defective works interspersed with major accomplishments. This book may be his best. It certainly is quirky so that it may not be to everyone's taste. The story which intertwines lives and changes narrative perspective (successfully) in the last section actually revolves around tape recordings by a person who committed suicide after a triumphs in the movies in a dialogue with a novelist who shares traits with the author. Quite a conceit. The pivotal event in the past deals with the novelist's father's last patriotic suicidal attack on a bank. The novel is richly textured, very vivid, carefully reflective, the characters extremely well portrayed. Sometimes the writing seems as if were meant to be translated as explanations of Japanese phrases follow. Immersion in this book will produce a profound understanding of post World War II Japanese reactions and the intellectual world that then developed. An adventure indeed and one worth taking for any lively mind.

Space Is The Place: The Lives And Times Of Sun Ra, by John F. Szwed

Sun Ra, a.k.a. Herman Poole "Sonny" Blount (1914–1993), has been hailed as "one of the great big-band leaders, pianists, and surrealists of jazz" (New York Times) and as "the missing link between Duke Ellington and Public Enemy" (Rolling Stone). Composer, keyboardist, bandleader, philosopher, poet, and self-proclaimed extraterrestrial from Saturn, Sun Ra led his "Intergalactic Arkestra" of thirty-plus musicians in a career that ranged from boogie-woogie and swing to be-bop, free jazz, fusion, and New Age music. This definitive biography reveals the life, philosophy, and musical growth of one of the twentieth century's greatest avant-garde musicians.

Amazon.com Review
Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama in 1914, he reinvented himself in the 1950s as Sun Ra, the great surrealist of jazz whose free-form performances with his Arkestra amply justified the description "'jspace music." His mystical beliefs were equally avant-garde; Yale professor John Szwed sympathetically explains some fairly far-out notions as "driven by a hunger for totality that only music could express." Szwed recovers the biographical facts Sun Ra was often at pains to obscure, without losing sight of the overriding role imagination played in this visionary life.

Review
... Szwed has produced a rare jazz biography--one that takes full account of the history that shaped the music and its central personalities. An anthropologist, historian and musicologist who teaches at Yale, Szwed brings an impressive array of skills to this job. He needs them all to track down a subject whose every word seems intended to protect him from scrutiny. -- The New York Times Book Review, Brent Staples

One of America's most prolific and daring musicians, Sun Ra located himself in outer space, beyond both the geographical limits of the United States and the ideological limits of Jim Crow and the Cold War. Such views, spliced with a homegrown Egyptology, earned Sun Ra a reputation as an Afro-eccentric charlatan-genius in the tradition of Marcus Garvey and Elijah Muhammad, and kept his"Arkestra" below the radar of concert halls and record companies. This biography charts Sun Ra's career, showing how he defied critics' periodization schemes, pioneering free jazz and electronic music in the 1940s and reviving big bands in the 1970s. Szwed presents Sun Ra's neoplatonic philosophizing as serious scholarship, however, rather than the charismatic myth-making and -unmaking that it clearly was. The book's treatment of his music--a joyful noise authorized by biblical prophecy, rooted in his native Birmingham's African-American fraternal, club, and society dance orchestras of the 1930s, and branching out into the heavenly spheres--suffers by comparison. Perhaps this late romantic jazz totalist, who shunned sex and drugs, rejected modern notions of race and nation, and took his merry band of"tone scientists" on shoestring-and-bootstrap world tours, will never be brought down to earth.

From the Inside Flap
Always riveting, Space Is the Place is the definitive biography of "one of the great big-band leaders, pianists, and surrealists of jazz"(New York Times)--unparalleled for his purposeful outlandishness, a man who exerted a powerful influence over a vast array of artists.

Sun Ra--a/k/a Herman Poole "SonnyBlount--was born in Alabama on May 22, 1914. But like Father Divine and Elijah Muhammad, he made a lifelong effort to obscure many of the facts of his early life. After years as a rehearsal pianist for nightclub revues and in blues and swing bands, including Wynonie Harris's and Fletcher Henderson's, Sun Ra set out in the 1950s to find a way to impart his views about the galaxy, black people, and spiritual matters through the various incarnations of the Intergalactic Arkestra. His repertoire ranging from boogie-woogie, swing, and bebop to free form, fusion, and whatever, Sun Ra was above all a paragon of contradictions: profundity and vaudeville; technical pianistic virtuosity and irony; assiduous attention to arrangements and encouragement of collective improvisation; respect for tradition and celebration of the fresh.

Some might have been bemused by his Afro-Platonic neo-hermeticism; others might have laughed at his egregious excesses. But Sun Ra was at once one of the great avant-gardists of the latter half of the twentieth century and a black cultural nationalist who extended Afrocentrism from ancient Egypt to the heavens.

Must Reading for Sun Ra Fans
By Patrick O. Moore
First let me say that I am a bigtime Sun Ra fan. If someone did not like Sun Ra's music, this book would probably not be as much fun, but it still might be interesting - say, a three-star rating instead of a five.
Ra has made much of his swing era big band background, having arranged for and performed with Fletcher Henderson ca. 1947, during that band leader's years of decline. This book documents something much less obvious: Ra's indebtedness to doo wop, R&B and even mood music. Who would have guessed the resemblance to Les Baxter? I now hear both Ra and Baxter with new ears. Starting in the first chapter, the book provides important background available nowhere else, such as detailed description of the 1930s Birmingham social clubs, a little known musical scene.
About two thirds of the way through, the narration freezes and the book gets bogged down in describing Ra as a philosopher and poet. This is rather thin soup. Szwed tosses out twenty-dollar terms like "gnosticism" without giving any clear evidence that he, or Ra for that matter, really understands them. Fact is that Ra's genius was largely intuitive, and his uses of Egyptian history and futuristic technophilia were largely metaphorical posturing. Ra's philosophy and poetry are valuable only because he was a musical genius. Students of the music should remember that the programmatic content was used ritually in performance but in no way validates his music or makes it better.
The chapters covering the 1930s through 1960s are fairly detailed. In contrast, the narration about Ra's last 15 years (1977-92) is curtailed (perhaps by a deadline), and we get barely one page per year of activity. A complement to Szwed's book is Robert Campbell's discography, The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra (Cadence Books), which gives very few pages to the early years but becomes thick by listing recordings made in the 1980s, when technology had made live recordings commonplace.
...I am about to read John Szwed's book for the fifth time. After reading it the second time, I was so sorry to finish I had to start over again. That's why I wish there were more about his late recording and touring career.
If you don't know Sun Ra's music, start with the Evidence CDs and get with it. If you already know and like Ra's music, then you will enjoy this book.

The Definitive Biography of "Mr. Mystery"
By A Customer
John Szwed's "Space is the Place" is a monumental achievement. Sun Ra is arguably the most difficult figure on whom a person could possibly write a biography, since throughout his life he denied that he was even from Earth. This makes Szwed's careful analysis of his formative years in Alabama, replete with factual details, all the more compelling and welcome. What soon becomes apparent is that Sun Ra was often a misunderstood musician and composer who was one of the few artists in jazz history that encompassed every generic possibility of jazz in his art. In Ra's music, you heard everything from swing, be-bop, hard-bop, free-jazz, and even traces and significations of more popular musical forms (i.e., doo-wop, blues, and even disco in the late-70s). And he not only drew from these genres, but in many ways helped to shape them, by forming new and revising old musical trends. One can only hope that the world will eventually be graced with biographies of Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor that are as carefully researched as Szwed's study of Sun Ra.
Szwed's book also delves deeply into the space-influenced philosophy of Sun Ra and its emphasis on "discipline" and "precision." While Szwed features direct quotes when possible, he also paraphrases the philosophy of Sun Ra frequently. His analysis could have gone much farther into Ra's critique of Christianity and his use of language. At one point, he mentions that both Ra and Nietzsche "unflinchingly assaulted received Christianity" (p.383), but he does not extend his analysis further. (It would have been interesting to compare how both artists used the theme of "overcoming" in their art, or perhaps a discussion of the similarities in their critiques of democracy.) Szwed also could have drawn a stronger connection between Ra and the European Romantics that he occasionally mentions, including William Blake. Both figures were visionaries who tried to break their "mind forged manacles" and reach a higher state of innocence by using aesthetics as a catalyst to reach transcendental experiences.
It also would have been useful to analyze more thoroughly Sun Ra's use of binary oppositions in his speeches and in his interrogation of concepts such as "Truth," "Righteousness," and "Death." Despite Sun Ra's truly amazing ability to parse the English language in his lectures, often major logical fallacies emerged in his approach to such matters (although Sun Ra, at some point, probably deconstructed the term "Logic" as well). It would have been nice for Szwed to at least acknowledge the limitations of Sun Ra's thought along with discussing its strengths. However, Szwed's book is the best study of one of the most important thinkers and artists of the "omniverse age" and should be required reading for anyone interested in jazz music.

Fine Explanation of a Complex Phenomenon
By Scott McFarland
The book is well-written and does what it sets out to do - explain who Sun Ra was and what he was doing. This is no mean feat. Sun Ra was a man of many interests and beliefs, of whom many misconceptions exist. Even most of his fans (I've been listening to Ra's music for about 10 years now) will probably learn much and gain tremendous perspective on him from this book (I certainly did).
The book's story is one of a man with artistic genius within him, who probably could have been a millionaire and musical "star" - who chose to do other things instead. Here is the unusual story of what he did and why he did it.
There is room for another book in the world on Ra's discography, that traces the patterns, forms, and themes of his vast catalogue of recorded music. There is room in the world for a book that tells the stories of the members of Ra's Arkestra. But this is not those books, this is the first logical step in studies : an explanation of Sun Ra himself. It's a difficult job very well done.

Low Carb, High Fat Food Revolution: Advice and Recipes to Improve Your Health and Reduce Your Weight, by Andreas Eenfeldt

You hear miraculous stories in the news all the time—a man loses 370 pounds, another is able to return ten of his twelve medications at the pharmacy, and an epileptic child suddenly stops having seizures—each experiences a miraculous change in health, all from simply changing his or her diet. Fascinatingly, these stories all have one thing in common; the subjects started eating the opposite of what they had previously been told was healthy. The dietary guidelines they had learned growing up had failed them.

Medical science has long turned a blind eye to such stories. But now the tide is changing, as more and more major studies are being conducted on what the body truly needs to survive—and the findings are alarming. The belief in eating less fat and less saturated fat is mistaken. Inadvertently, this advice may be the biggest reason behind the obesity and diabetes epidemic. It’s time to take a stand; it’s time for real food again!

In Low Carb, High Fat Food Revolution, Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt takes the offensive by exploring the severe systematic failures on which many of today’s dietary guidelines are based. For Eenfeldt’s patients, the solution has been a low-carb, high-fat diet that allows you to eat your fill—and still lose weight. The book concludes with a guide section full of tips and recipes—everything you need to start your own food revolution.

Lost Decades of Weight with This Real-Food Approach, Has Changed my Life
By Gadget Fan
PROs- Succinct description of food plan, good scientific explanation of this approach *****
CONs- Publisher did hack job in translation and preparation for publication **

I was finally able to figure out how to eat low-carb with regular real food after reading Dr. Eenfeldt's English blog. I was thin until thyroid problems hit with pregnancy, and have strived for many years to figure out an eating plan that worked for me. Low-Carb always made sense, but I could never get it to work, but for me, this one does! My ongoing weight loss is slow but consistent (others get faster results, but I keep myself sane by including small amounts of my favorite sourdough bread). I have never felt confident about buying clothes that I like that are a little too small until now. (Just last week I realized that my jeans had become too baggy and that I needed to donate them and put on the smaller jeans I had previously bought.) This is not the only book out there about LCHF, several other books cover the same territory, but because this book has some useful features, it is nice that this book is finally available in English.

Unlike other diet books which take pages and pages to simply explain the diet, the basic diet takes only 3 pages to explain. I really appreciate that he explains the principles of the eating plan simply and straightforwardly. But additional very helpful details, example menus, a handful of useful recipes (some may want more), questions, practical food suggestions, restaurant strategies, and so forth are explained in the rest of the Guide (Part III) so are very worth reading, only 55 pages total. It includes yummy real foods which I had been denying myself (such as avocados, nuts, cheese, and charcuterie) as well as specific vegetables and fruits which are naturally low-carb, rather than relying on powders, bars, shakes, artificial sweeteners, faux recipes, and allegedly "low-carb" manufactured foods.

For me, the challenge with low-carb adequate protein eating was wrapping my head around the need for higher amounts of fat that you eat instead of carbs. In the past there have been so many people pushing all sorts of fake foods and strange recipes (Dr. A for one), that were unappealing and big fails when I tried them. Couldn't I just eat more protein rather than all that fat? (As a casualty of the low-fat wars who was unaware of the benefits of the right fats, and who at one point ate no more than 5g of fat a day, I still thought fat should be avoided.) Finally reading a year ago (before this book was available in English) on Dr. Eenfeldt's blog about how excess protein is converted to blood sugar, so you don't want to eat more than a certain amount, made me understand why low carb diets have to replace those carbs with beneficial fats, as well as just enough protein. I have found that if my weight loss stalls, to make sure I'm eating enough fat, and then it resumes. Daily experience with tracking my consumption on this diet has taught me that carbs make me hungry, while smaller amounts of fat do not -- this, plus adequate protein is what makes this diet work for me. (Recently it has dawned on me that this is how I ate when I was a skinny teenager and young woman, until I decided to "improve" my health by going low-fat.)

Parts I and II cover the history of various approaches to dieting, and provide scientific grounding into how low-carb high-fat (LCHF) diets work, territory that is covered by many other books out there as well, so depending on how much you've been reading, it may or may not be new to you. It comprises most of the book and is very readable with explanations that make a lot of sense (though some may find it repetitious). It explains how the hormonal effects of low-carb eating help weight loss, and why you want to get your insulin levels low and how higher insulin makes you fat. It is interesting that this kind of diet is how diabetes was treated before insulin was available as a medication, for example. And then there are numerous beneficial effects of specific kinds of fats for the metabolism and the brain, which I was unaware of. For anyone wondering "isn't this unhealthy?", my blood lipids are great, with off-the-chart high HDLs (good), and my doctor says "just keep doing what you're doing" (my lucky genes help). After the Guide (part III), there are resources for finding out more, and extensive references.

There are numerous examples of people with not only weight loss, but also improvements in other health issues like diabetes, fatty liver, acne, seizures, etc. on his blog, which you can find by searching the web for "weight-loss-stories DietDoctor". It is worth exploring the other topics on his DietDoctor blog as well, because there he does discuss additional useful topics and resources which are not in the book.

Unfortunately, the publisher did a really poor job preparing this book for publication. While the translation itself reads smoothly, there are glitches (they talk about gorging on "crayfish tails", but I think they meant "lobster tails"). But there are some more severe problems. Measurement units were mostly not converted, so some discussion is less meaningful to US readers (to convert blood glucose numbers to those used in the US, multiply by 18). Also many of the medications mentioned have different names in different countries, those should have been added as well. Every time a URL is given, it is to his Swedish site, when instead it should be to his corresponding English site DietDoctor. And the page numbers are wrong in the index, sometimes only 2 pages off, but I have found some that are over 20 pages off. This makes it hard to find a specific topic you want to recheck. Finally, there are no footnotes and few citations in the text, so that if you want to track down more about some topic he discussed at a certain point, you don't know which of the many references at the back are the ones to refer to. It seems like the editorial and production departments were not paying attention, diminishing the usability of this thorough work, too bad (hence 4 stars rather than 5).

In spite of publisher glitches, I strongly recommend considering this life changing (for me) book, as well as investigating his DietDoctor website. There are many other books which cover low-carb high-fat dieting, but several rely on fake food like artificial sweeteners or protein powder, or odd recipes. It was a relief when I encountered his approach because it is so much easier to just utilize tasty real food that is already out there.

Went from a1c 8.4 to 5.2 following Eenfeldt's advice
By Lee Fleming
Now off all diabetes meds and half of the hypertension meds and lost 75 pounds in 18 months because I followed Dr. Eenfeldt's advice on dietdoctor dot com. This book pulls it all together in one place and backs it up with the science where available. He makes it clear that you need to tailor your diet to your needs rather than giving a one-size-fits-all prescription. Provides suggestions for how to reduce carbs and suggestions for meal plans. I highly recommend this book.

Buy it and then share it. This diet will save lives
By Conrad Estrada
I heard about the low carb hight fat diet a couple years ago and I though it was crazy stuff. After reviewing the science behind this I understand why our health as a species has been severely damaged by bad advice from inappropriate information. I believe that anyone can do it. If I can give one piece of advice, it would be to eliminate most foods that come in a box or a container - eat real food.

The book is very well written, and I'm very happy this information is out in english now.
