Good but not what was expected

You really still have to work from ISO 9000 and AS91xx and find examples that other companies have implemented as this book does not summarize or quote to material. It's really a commentary on top of these standards meant to help prepare you for an audit. It details common major and minor findings to help you check your system for completeness. It offers some examples for basic implementation but not for everything that is required. Worth the money, but don't expect this to teach you how to build a quality system from the ground up.

Residing in Oslo, Norway, Lars Martin Fosse holds a master’s and doctorate from the University of Oslo, and also studied at the Universities of Heidelberg, Bonn, and Cologne. Accessible and universal

One of the first things I noticed about this edition was the inclusion of the original Sanskrit text. The second thing I noticed was that the illustrations matched the clothing and jewellery of the era that the Kamasutra was written. These two details made reading the main text a lot more enjoyable and enriching for me (even though I can't read the original Sanskrit, it makes me feel more "connected" to the original writing from ancient Indian culture, especially since I've always had an interest in ancient civilisations).

The brief introduction of the book (around a succinct 5 pages) states to the reader very clearly what the book is and isn't:

"...it abscribes a deep, positive value to sex: it isn't simply for reproduction--sexual happiness matters, and it's important for one's physical and mental health."

"Perhaps our challenge is to learn what we can without damaging who we are...One could even use this knowledge to find and nurture true love."

With this clear introduction in place, the reader is then invited to peruse the rest of the book, which covers subjects such as sexual intercourse (ten chapters with seventeen sections--lots of juicy/useful details about ways of biting, unusual sex acts, beginning and conclusion of intercourse, etc.), conduct of a wife, courtesans (a very lovely and exotic section, for me!), and advanced methods (this one covers how to achieve luck in love, etc--albeit set in "the ancient world," still very educational and illuminating).

This book is also published by YogaVidya, which is "dedicated to publishing quality books about Yoga." I like that the company is completely independent of any commercial, governmental, educational or religious institutions, as I trust that this means the product/book is more like to be presented as what it is "in essence" (i.e. uninfluenced by personal and/or some other kind of moral or political agenda).

I am glad to say this was my experience with this textual edition and presentation of The Kamasutra. I'd recommend it to anyone who was interested in what the original text really is all about. The easy reading and nice accompanying illustrations help ensure this ancient (and practical) guide continues to be available to the masses in its original non-gimmicky state, so that we too can continue to explore the psychology and practice of pleasure through sexual behaviour.

I think that just about anyone would be fascinated by this book

The Kamasutra is one of the most famous books around. Everyone has heard of the famous book, but how many have actually read it? Well, if you are interested in reading the Kamasutra, then this is the translation you should pick!

This book at least claims to be the first complete edition of the Kamasutra, and certainly it does seem to have everything. Each section of the book begins with the words in the original Sanskrit, which is followed up by an English-language translation. The book is easy to understand, with none of the sections coming across as obscure or enigmatic. The book also contains fifty quite excellent full-page, pen-and-ink illustrations. These are done in a realistic manner, with the people or place shown depicted realistically for the period.

I really enjoyed this book. The sexual information was quite interesting; it's what made the book famous. But, I also was fascinated by the advice for wives in polygamous relationships. Personally, I think that just about anyone would be fascinated by this book, which has so much to say about sexuality, and about Indian culture in that era.

There are five items in my wardrobe I cannot live without. The cornerstones I rely upon to make newer, weirder clothing look OK. Without them I would be lost.

My relationship with my denim hotpants is incredibly special. I pack them in my hand luggage when I travel because I fear that one day we will be separated and I will be forced to go out bottomless forevermore because no other shorts will ever be able to replace them. Since the day I found them lurking in a Brixton charity shop we have become so inseparable that even when I take them off they still retain the shape of my bum as they lie on my bedroom floor. I use them to dress down a flashy top, as a practical alternative to muddy trousers at festivals, and over the years have cut them shorter and shorter so that they are now borderline obscene (they keep getting cheekier). Until the denim disintegrates and falls off me, these particular hotpants are here to stay.

A navy blue jumper is potentially the most boring item anyone could design and yet it’s my most important possession. The one I own belongs to an ex-boyfriend, and before shops caught on and made ‘boyfriend-fit jeans’ and ‘boyfriend sweaters’ everyone was happily throwing on their actual boyfriend’s belongings to keep warm. I have never travelled without it and it has rescued me from many mornings of outfit panic. Once when I was heartbroken a male friend of mine sent me his navy cashmere jumper to wear as a perpetual hug to cheer me up. It worked.

My Burberry trench coat is something I saved up for a long time to buy. When I wear it I feel like a French detective from the sixties. Yet I love how quintessentially British it is, in that it’s practical yet proper. It was either this or a cagoule. I think I made the right choice.

Every woman needs s a transportable receptacle to shove her collection of clutter into, and as much as I love some It Bag arm candy I am just as happy to pile everything into a canvas tote. Sometimes I wish I could live like a man and fit everything I need into a single back pocket but that’s never going to happen and besides, then I would lose out on the daily drama that occurs when I think I’ve lost something and have to tip the contents of my bag out only to discover my phone is in my hand. I think a canvas tote bag is as classic as a Chanel 2.55 and the bonus is you can shove it in a washing machine without having a mental breakdown.

I thought I could narrow it down to five items I couldn’t live without but I can’t, so: ankle boots because you can wear them with literally anything. A pair of Wayfarer sunglasses—wear at night to seem extra aloof. Ballet flats—I can’t dance but that doesn’t stop me from trying. Dungarees—it’s fine that only toddlers and me like these. A white shirt—a no-brainer.

There's Nothing to "It"

Wow! What a mess and a huge mistake by me (and Alexa).
I expected so much more and was left with a feeling that Alexa Chung and her friends need a huge reality check.

I usually love books like this and was expecting something along the lines of 'Rookie Yearbook One' by Tavi Gevinson or 'The Goddess Guide' by Gisele Scanlon - one of my all time favourite books.

I'm 19 and when I heard Alexa was writing a book I thought that's my Christmas list sorted but unfortunately no. If it were even a tiny bit more like The Goddess Guide with drawings and photographs and personal stories I'd have given it another star but unfortunately I've found nothing to date as cool for art, photography and super smart writing.

Also I don't like the "It" title. What does "It" mean?

It seems that "It" is devoid of any reality....

John Crace's 'Digested Read' in The Guardian, reviewed 'It' and summed up exactly how I feel here after 1 hour of frustrated reading...

I still love Alexa on TV but I'm afraid from now on I'll give her books a miss.

Unfortunately on this occasion she comes across as sycophantic and rather uncool. There's very little to champion here : ( and it's also too expensive.

I LOVE YOU ALEXA, BUT WHYYY?

As soon as I heard that Alexa Chung was writing a book I jumped on amazon and pre-ordered. I wish her book had more substance. Reading her book was a painful experience. She is an amazing host and has amazing style... Maybe she should stick to what she knows best. The book is aesthetically pleasing. The pictures makeup for the lack of effort that seems to have gone into the writing. After reading this book I felt I wasted my money.

Assigned a Daddy

After caught shop lifting Darla is sentenced six months in a new program. One that is supposed to help women just like her that need a specific type of guidance. Darla feels nervous from the moment she meets Mike Beckwith. Unsure what the next six months will bring Darla forces herself to be open minded to Mike's ways but sometimes she goes astray.

Mike feels this new program is the change he needs in his life. Meeting Darla he knows he'll have his hands full but he is more than ready to take on the task. With a firm hand Mike guides Darla and helps her open her eyes to possibilities she never imagined.

I loved the uniqueness of this story and the beautiful bond that Mike and Darla form. It was realistic in that Darla questioned everything Mike did and her need to hesitate showed through even when she complied with her Daddy's wishes. The growth that Darla experiences from beginning to end is absolutely wonderful. With her Daddy's firm hand Darla is sure to change and blossom into her true self.

The key to this one is the hot hot dialogue. I love me some dirty talk - and descriptive dirty talk is incredibly hot. Loved the premise, the way the story went, and the interactions. This one is a definite purchase if this is your thing (ageplay)

This is a futuristic story of the year 2067. A new program enacted by Selecta for non-violent crimes, has dominant men, like former marine colonel Mike Beckwith, as guardians over naughty young ladies like Darla Hawkins, shoplifter. The six-month program called Daddy’s Naughty Little Girls, where Mike will become a Daddy to Darla, and she will be his little girl and fall under his complete guidance. Darla will keep her job and Daddy will take her and pick her up, but his rules, his ways, no exceptions. Selecta Corporation has proven facts of how well the program works, with complete guidelines that include Daddies training their naughty girls in all ways to make them ready for adult relationships and responsibilities. The program numbers show that many times the Daddy/little relationships become permanent and even with marriages. The plot is a futuristic age-play story and is very explicit in sex scenes, anal play, medical play, and punishments. This book argues that – contrary to contemporary Lithuanian nationalist rhetoric – Lithuanian nationalism was modern and socially constructed in the period from the emergence of the Lithuanian national movement in the late nineteenth century to the birth of an independent state in 1918. The book brings into sharp focus those aspects of the history of Lithuania that earlier commentators had not systematically explored: it shows how, in this period, the nascent political elite fashioned its own and the emerging nation’s identity. Moreover, factors such as the elite’s social isolation, educational experience, marital strategies and narrowly based, fragmented and uncoordinated political activities were crucial factors in shaping identity and nation-building. It demonstrates how the elite was often in conflict with the peasantry, the religious establishment and other ethnic groups, and how critical considerations such as class, religion, displacement and ethnicity – rather than national ideology – were. The book’s conclusion that Lithuanian nationalism is a construct emerging from modern social forces is highly significant for understanding nationalism and contemporary political developments in Eastern Europe more generally.

Ronald Spores has dedicated his career to the study of the Mixteca in Mexico. In this book he joined efforts with Andrew Balkansky in order to cover the history of the region, from the first archeological evidence of occupation to present-day migrations. Both writers, each with his specialty, have helped create this panoramic view of great erudition. It might be too broad for a specialized student, but anyone who's looking for a introduction to all major topics of Mixtec history is going to find this book pleasant and thorough.

Heady and Hardy

Ten years ago I picked up this teeny book as part of my background reading for my doctoral thesis. It was a stretch to read then, but I sensed Voegelin was on to something. Now, ten years later, in the midst of a hot presidential campaign season, with loads of climactic social changes erupting in the country, and racial tensions flaring, I picked it up again and read it with a better appreciation for what the author was communicating. This 102 page paperback is a densely argued, heady work that revolves around two major essays penned by the author in 1959.

"Science, Politics, and Gnosticism" is a work that delves into modern political theory with the author standing in a specific position: one that is open to the divine other while scanning the horizon of modern mass ideological movements. Voegelin is convinced, and seeks to convince the reader, that these modern mass movements are, at the end of the day, Gnostic. The major premise is that these movements are following the trajectory of the lust for power. Since there is a prevailing feeling of alienation from creation because it is a hostile place, and because being is given, therefore these movements seek to take control of being by destroying the givenness of being; “the aim is destruction of the old world and passage to the new” (10). And it is believed that by crafting our brave, new world, the alienation will be, at long last, assuaged.

To reach for this salvation, reality (givenness of being, etc) must be destroyed: “But reality must be destroyed – this is the great concern of gnosis” (26).This destroying of reality is for the purpose of making space to fabricate a second reality so as to gain control of being, to make “being” whatever humankind wants to define it as and construct it into. For this undertaking, Voegelin has a jarring description: “And taking control of being requires that the transcendent origin of being be obliterated: it requires the decapitation of being – the murder of God” (40). The murdering of God then opens existence up to the gnostic re-creation of the order of being (41). The disposing of the transcendent now makes the order of being only immanent – that which is here-and-now is all there is. It is to shift from the uncertain truth of transcendent being to the constructed certain untruth of immanent being; “The nature of the order of being as it is given, together with man’s place in it, is obliterated: the being of world and ego is restricted to the knowledge of the immediate and existent…” (51).

The end result of this gnostic trick of destroying the old world to progress into the new-made eon will only result in greater alienation and frustration, for the “attempt at world destruction will not destroy the world, but will only increase the disorder in society” (10). And the murder of God can only bring about the termination of humankind; “The nature of a thing cannot be changed; whoever tries to “alter” its nature destroys the thing. Man cannot transform himself into superman: the attempt to create a superman is an attempt to murder man. Historically, the murder of God is not followed by the superman, but by the murder of man: the deicide of the gnostic theoreticians is followed by the homicide of the revolutionary practitioners” (47-8).

And there is the rub, “The nature of a thing cannot be changed; whoever tries to “alter” its nature destroys the thing.” As Divine Wisdom declares, “all who hate me love death” (Proverbs 8.36). In this era of renewed and heightened societal re-scripting of the nature of decency, marriage, the common good, Christianity, justice, and whatever else in the name of progress, is – according to Voegelin – a rejection of the givenness of being, a denial of the nature of our embodied existence, etc. The goal of this rejection and denial is to grasp for the reins and redesign reality for the purpose of concocting our own salvation, a social salvation. But in the end it will only intensify the alienation, and bring death.

"Science, Politics, and Gnosticism" is truly a thick read, thick in the sense that there is rich substance between the covers of this short book. It requires a slow reading to fathom what Voegelin is presenting, and the pay-off is that it provides a new way of hearing and discerning the mass movements on the right and the left. I warmly endorse this work!

Remarkable and Eminently Readable

I came to this book after years of having conversation and debate with something of a student of Voegelin's -- someone who was much better read, I'll confess, than myself. Furthermore, as a person who has completed degrees in philosophy and psychoanalysis, I can say with confidence that there have been few short books of philosophy I've ever read that have been articulated with as much conviction, clarity and rigor as this one. Just what sort of a positive vision of cosmic order Voegelin is advocating, in place of the "Gnosticism" of those he criticizes, is something that I need to read more of his work, I think, to really grasp. But his readings of Hegel, Marx, and Nietzsche, particularly as contained in this book, are among the most provocative and original pieces of philosophical critique I've ever come across -- as is his criticism of the intellectual corruptions endemic to "social science" as it's practiced in the modern university. If you've ever wanted to get into Voegelin, but don't know where to start, look no further.

The Murder of God and Other Exhilarating Ideas

These two essays describe the inability of modern political thought to get a grip on the disorder and horror of the twentieth century. Part of the problem is that the thinkers themselves have been susceptible to the diseases under study. The roots of modern disorder are found in "gnosticism," which is narrowly defined as a Christian heresy, but thought of by Voegelin as a typical and recurring pattern of response to the universal problems of alienation, meaninglessness, and uncertainty.

In the title essay, Voegelin outlines his own approach to the "science of politics," derived mainly from Plato and Aristotle. He then proceeds to isolate the dominant motives and symbols of modern thinkers such as Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and Heidegger. The one great theme of all gnosticisms, ancient or modern, is the desire to do away with the notion of an objective world. For the project of world-transformation to be made plausible, the transcendent order of being must be treated as a human construction. If God is of human making, then God can be unmade.

In the second essay, "Ersatz Religion," Voegelin describes the complex of ideas characteristic of modern mass movements. Given his wider conception of the term gnosticism, he is able to interpret such seemingly disparate modern movements as positivism and fascism within a larger gnostic framework. As the title of the essay suggests, the religious impulse does not die after the murder of God; it gets redirected into "political religions." Politics then becomes a matter of fanatical belief, instead of debatable opinions.
