This is a great book for kids, as they will be able to better understand their own emotions!

While I have yet to see the Inside Out movie, this was a great retelling of the movie from the perspectives of the characters. I loved seeing the differences between the characters and so did my girls. It was so unique to see how you see the world in different ways based on what emotion is seeing the situation. This is a great book for kids, as they will be able to better understand their own emotions!

This is a gorgeous hard-cover book my kids like looking at. It's a bit above their age range, but would be the perfect gift for a school-age child working to sort out all the emotions they are dealing with!

I would give it three and a half stars.to four.
I assume it tells the whole movie story but just paraphrasing. The whole book is about the five emotions first-person point of views of the story. It goes from Joy's point of view of the story, then Disgust, then Fear, then Anger, and then Sadness. Although the concept was original, It was not necessary to have all the emotions point of views. I can understand Joy's and Sadness's retelling because they are the main characters of the plot.
But, the other three were just retelling of the same story (Of them without Joy and Sadness) only with some small changes. It became extremely boring but I read through them. To make it more boring it was all in paraphrase and not a feeling of individual stories. Plus, the book was too long and stretch everything except the main characters stories.
I wish it went from Joy and Sadness to short few pages of the other three or had them all together and use third person omniscient.

This handbook led to our most successful auction ever!

My non-profit has been holding a silent auction at our annual fundraiser for years, and we thought we knew what we were doing, but noticed that we weren't increasing our earnings by much year over year, despite being given higher-value items to auction. We had this book sitting around in our files, but no one felt like they had the time to read it. Well, I finally decided that it was time to break it out, and I am glad that I did! It was an easy read, and I found myself emailing excerpts to my colleagues as I read, sparking great conversations about how we were handling things. We had long debated changing the format of the auction, revamping our bid sheets, etc.. and the handbook gave us straight-forward guidance on how to make those changes without over-complicating things and confusing our potential donors. We were able to make some small modifications and this year had the smoothest and highest-earning auction to date. Next year we will be incorporating even more of the suggestions from the handbook, and look forward to even more success than this year. Thanks Joe for another great guide!

I am on a committee as assistant chairperson to plan a silent auction this coming November. This book has been invaluable to me from what to cover at the first committee meeting which is taking place this month to the suggestion of having a place for bidding on the mission needs itself. About the Author
Dr. William H. Hoffman, Jr., earned B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Michigan and M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Texas. He is a licensed CPA and attorney in Texas. His teaching experience includes The University of Texas (1957-1961), Louisiana State University (1961-1967), and the University of Houston (1967-1999). His articles appear in THE JOURNAL OF TAXATION, THE TAX ADVISER, TAXES ? THE TAX MAGAZINE, THE JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTANCY, THE ACCOUNTING REVIEW, and TAXATION FOR ACCOUNTANTS.

David M. Maloney, Ph.D., CPA, is the Carman G. Blough Professor of Accounting at the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Richmond and his graduate work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Accounting Association and the American Taxation Association.

William A. Raabe, Ph.D., CPA, teaches graduate tax courses at the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University and at the Capital University (OH) Law School. He is a leader among business school tax faculty in incorporating developments in technology into curricula for the educational development of tax professionals. Dr. Raabe's teaching and research interests focus on multijurisdictional taxation and financial planning, and he is recognized as the leader among business school academics in the fields of state and local income, sales, and property taxation. Dr. Raabe is the author or editor of approximately twenty books, including this text, SCHEDULE M-3 COMPLIANCE, and the MULTISTATE CORPORATE TAX GUIDE. He has received university-wide recognition as the winner of the AMOCO Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs named him the Educator of the Year.

Dr. James C. Young is the Crowe Horwath Professor of Accountancy at Northern Illinois University. A graduate of Ferris State University (B.S.) and Michigan State University (M.B.A. and Ph.D.), Dr. Young's research focuses on taxpayer responses to the income tax using archival data. His dissertation received the PricewaterhouseCoopers/American Taxation Association Dissertation Award, and his subsequent research has received funding from a number of organizations including the Ernst & Young Foundation Tax Research Grant Program. His work has been published in a variety of academic and professional journals including the NATIONAL TAX JOURNAL, THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN TAXATION ASSOCIATION, and TAX NOTES. Dr. Young was named a Northern Illinois University Presidential Teaching Professor in 2007, and he has received outstanding teaching awards from George Mason University and Michigan State University.

It is what it says it is

This is the professional edition of South Western Federal Taxation 2014 Comprehensive Volume, hardcover. Been trying to get this textbook for a class for several weeks and some listings don't describe it truthfully (loose leaf, digital access code, etc.). I have yet to see what is different about the Professional edition, although if you register the book you get content updates when the tax code changes - maybe that is it. This is the standard in tax books, and is something you will use for years to come as a current student purchasing it. You will probably have multiple tax classes in your life and a great reference book is handy for personal reasons too. I advise you to buy a physical copy such as this as opposed to "renting" access to a web-based ebook.

Great Intro Tax Text

Great book. Not an easy read, you have to read the chapters very carefully, but I love the format of the text and solved problems within the narrative of each chapter. I don't know of many books that have this format. I didn't buy this book from Amazon, I bought it directly from the publisher as a binder version. The binder version is not the same as the hardback version and it caused quite a mess for me - my instructor would assign problems and I was doing the wrong ones. The chapters in the binder version are completely different (Chapter 12 in the hardback is Chapter 15 in the binder.) Perhaps if I'd bought it from Amazon I could have saved myself a lot of trouble. Anyhow, this is a great book. I recommend it to anyone and it looks like the gold standard for intro tax texts!

This book never fails to impress. It has all the new guidelines for each new tax year. Its clear and concise and a great tax reference for newer and experienced accountants. I buy this book every year and I am never disappointed.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the criminal justice program at the State University of New York at Albany, earning his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Brandon C. Welsh is a Professor of Criminology at Northeastern University and Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement in Amsterdam. He received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England. His research interests focus on the prevention of crime and delinquency and evidence-based social policy. Dr. Welsh has published extensively in these areas and is an author or editor of ten books.

Very pleased

In my opinion this book is very interesting. I'm criminal justice law student and I've read lot of textbooks for my classes. Compared to other criminal justice books this book does not just give boring skew rates and tell you what to do. It gives you actual interesting examples. It is well organized. I'm telling you I'm not the happiest person when I have to read textbook but I always look forward to reading this one since I've only read two chapters. I also like its hard cover which allows me to read without any worries that I have to hold my book up straight. ☺️

Finally, enjoying a past time of painting and then writing a cookbook, from her collection of treasured recipes, incorporating memorable stories of life on the farm. Dianne has introduced pieces of her artwork within her first published book. She and her husband now reside in Peace River, AB.

About the Author
Rodolphe Durand is the GDF-Suez Professor of Strategy at HEC Paris. In 2010 he received the European Academy of Management’s Imagination Lab Foundation Award for Innovative Scholarship. His work has been published widely in academic journals. Jean-Philippe Vergne is an assistant professor of strategy at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. His ongoing research on the global arms industry received the inaugural Grigor McClelland Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2011.

Timid and tame

I expected more of a book about piracy as pertains to economics and capitalism, especially with such a splashy cover, and supposedly embracing ideas from Deleuze, Guattari, and Sloterdijk. Instead, the authors seem to almost want to reassure State-run capitalism that any naughty pirates out there are actually a beneficial force and will soon be happily absorbed into the system. It's ironic that the spirit of the Outlaw is precisely what's missing from this book. A few nice ideas scattered amidst a whole lotta text. Intelligent writing for the most part, but timid and tame. This probably made for an interesting paper once (downloadable through their website) and became a book by adding useless filler. Too bad. Not the worst thing I've read recently, but nothing significant gained by the effort in this case.

How non-conformists influence capitalism

Piracy could very well be one of the drivers of capitalism's growth and evolution, according to Rodolphe Durand and Jean-Philippe Vergne in this book. Pirates have appeared at major turning points in the history of capitalism: when capitalism began to spread along the trading routes towards the West Indies, when radio opened an era of mass communication, when the Internet became part of the global economy, and when the biotech revolution began.

To support their argument, the authors have adopted a special definition of "pirate". Humble Somali pirates who rake in mere tens of millions of dollars with their banditry do not qualify. Instead, true pirates have the following characteristics:

* they enter into a conflictive "relationship" with the state, especially when the state claims to be the sole source of sovereignty;
* they operate in an organized manner on uncharted territory, from a set of support bases located outside this territory, over which the state typically claims sovereign control;
* they develop, as alternative communities, a series of discordant norms that, according to them, should be used to regulate uncharted territory; and
* ultimately, they represent a threat to the state by contesting the state's control and the activities of the legal entities that operate under its jurisdiction, such as for-profit corporations and monopolies.

The authors draw a distinction between pirates, who operate as enemies to all states, and corsairs, who are sponsored by one state but regarded as pirates by other states. Thus Sir Francis Drake was part pirate and part corsair, and Chinese hackers who steal information from Western companies are sometimes corsairs.

According to the authors, the pirates of the Caribbean and Madagascar pioneered a number of important institutions. A pirate captain was elected on the democratic vote of all members of the pirate organization. The captain was in charge of maritime operations, but the quartermaster was in charge of distributing rations and booty and managing conflicts, so that a form of separation of powers existed. Pirate captains did not get preferential treatment; equality prevailed. The wounded were given extra pay, an early form of social insurance. Thus pirates pioneered democracy, separation of powers, equality and social insurance.

The book provides interesting ideas about pirate radio stations and anti-copyright activists, but when Wikileaks and patent trolls are referred to as pirates, the analogy seems to have been stretched a bit too far. Pirates are portrayed more as Gilbert-and-Sullivan-style do-gooders than as the violent aggressors that they always have been and Somali pirates still are. Nonetheless the book contains plenty of thought-provoking discussion about the impact of non-conformist organizations on the evolution of capitalism.

Fun Read with a Few Caveats....

This is a book for people who already have a firm grounding in the history of piracy. If you do, then you are in for a treat as the reader gets an enjoyable analysis of piracy past and present. This reading of piracy is from France so it has less to do with the objective world than it does the world of textuality and endlessly defining and re-defining this textuality.

If you are familiar with post-structuralism the reader will get more out of the book then if they weren't. There is also a left of center reading of piracy and its relationship to capitalism. This part of the text is less convincing, but still fascinating.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.

Worth a look if you are a critic of capitalism but still see a future for and if you enjoy late capitalist post-structural thought without the jargon.

Tim Hanna is the author of the best-selling (unauthorized and subsequently controversial) biography of NZ motorcycle designer John Britten. A former advertising copy writer, he has also written for television and is a motorcycle enthusiast in his own right.

one good run : The Legend of Burt Munro

Just brilliant. A great true storey of perseverance persistence and dedication to his one love his trusty Indian Scout.

Having bought it brand new in 1920 as a 21 year old, then selling and eventually buying it back. Burt was self taught as a mechanic engineer and manufacturer.

As parts were modified he made them, and made them using the most rudimentary tools and any second hand materials he could find.

From a small rural town in New Zealand he took his, by now, much modified bike to Bonneville Salt Flats and 200 miles an hour, when the bike was more than forty years old.

This book is called The Worlds Fastest Indian in other markets, the same name as the equally brilliant movie which hi-lights some of Burt's adventures. He loved to travel to America and the people he met there. He most certainly loved riding and modifying his Indian Scout.

A great book

I saw the movie first and absolutely loved it. Got the book from Europe after two failed attempts to order in the US.

It is an inspiring story with a good mix of technical detail and personal info about Burt Munro. It's well written all in all, not high literature, but a good bio style. Captivating and easy to read. Has some nice photographs also.

I loved the movie but thought that some scenes must have been exaggerated for dramatic purposes. Reading the book made me rethink: attaching a tree to the trailer to fix a lost wheel, old men need love too, mowing grass by burning it with gas,... It all appears in the book also, maybe slightly rearranged in the timeline though. Some things the man has done make you shake your head in disbelief.

If you like bikes, liked the movie, and like to read, you more than likely will enjoy this book also.

Good story about a unique man

If you've seen, and loved, The World's Fastest Indian, you might want to think twice about reading this book. Despite a good deal of romantization on the part of author Tim Hanna, the Burt Munroe depicted here is not exactly the kindly old coot seen in the movie. The real Munroe was a single-minded, often difficult, man who, in truth, abandoned his family, and ignored a good many social graces in order to pursue his one interest single mindedly.

But then, history is rarely made by gentle, accomodating people, and in this regard, the real Burt Munroe does not disappoint. While the movie is charming in its depiction of the kindly innocent abroad, the real story is much more complex, and in the end, much more interesting. Munroe was anything but the naiive innocent abroad on his first (of many) trips to America. He'd lived in Australia, travelled to England and much of the continent, and was quite the sophisticated traveller when he arrived at Bonneville. His knowledge of engineering was indeed largely self taught, but he also took advantage of the wisdom and experience (and good graces) of many others who advised him along his way.

Hanna does a very good job of telling Munroe's story- although he is perhaps a bit too eager to recreate conversations and internal monologues for my tastes. Still, it does help to move the narration along. And he does treat Munroe's relationship with his family rather perfunctorily, although I suppose it could be argued that it's not really the aspect of his life that people are most interested in.

Fans of motor racing and motorcycles will find much to enjoy here, particularly as George Begg's biography of Munroe (which Hanna acknowledges was a major source) is no longer in print.
