I did not know until I started reading this book, how very little I actually knew about the inner workings of SEO and how much is involved in getting to the top of Google. This is a great book for those who want to know more as well as a great do it yourself manual.

Small Business Owners, download this straight away!

I've only gone about 35% of the way after downloading this late last night, but I felt compelled to write a review this morning. Even if I had been charged for this book, I would still give it five stars. As a beginner, it makes the process of SEO very easy to understand and I must say a great deal of it makes perfect sense. The Author, though he says he's not an author, writes in easy language and if jargon is introduced, it is well explained.

Ok, I take someone's point here, there are a few weblinks peppered in there, but hey, you got it for free. I can't wait to try out the techniques described in this publication and though I know there is a lot of work involved, I feel sure that world domination is at hand for the small business where I work!!!

Excellent book Full of Very Valuable Information

Over the pass five years I have been trying to get a really good grasp on SEO. I have read a number of books on the subject at the same time as taking courses so I had a basic understanding of what needed to be done. So I really was looking for a book that filled in the blanks on the missing pieces along with bringing me up to date on the latest changes. This book has given me just what I needed. It is written in a down to earth matter for those of us who did not grow up with technology and gives a step by step plan on how to get to the top of the search engine results. I strongly recommend it for both the website owner who wants to do his/her own SEO along with those who want to perfect their skills like I did.

Java for Bioinformatics�and Biomedical Applications describes the work of the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) and a large number of cancer centers across the U.S. under the caBIG™ (cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid) program, as well as standard bioinformatics applications. The goal of NCI caBIG™ is to create a standards based, interoperable network of individuals, applications and data to enhance the pace of cancer research. CaBIG™ uses J2EE and open source standards for all software development work.� This book examines the tools and technologies being developed under caBIG™ to meet the goal of eliminating suffering and death from cancer by 2015 as formulated by the former NCI Director, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.In doing so, it provides a vignette into the efforts of thousands of people – molecular biologists, medical practitioners, software developers, to name a few - across the country to bring the promise of translational research to individuals with cancer.

From a software perspective, a functional approach is used to teach the Java platform and its features for enterprise-level application development. Under this approach, the various syntactical and operative elements of the language and any software libraries that have been used (for example, BioJava, Apache, etc.) are taught not in isolation but in the context of discrete definable research problems that enable the user to relate how the different parts of the language fit together in the big picture. All examples are derived from practical problems faced in biomedical/clinical data retrieval and analysis during routine bioinformatics and cancer research. Further, the book illustrates how individual bioinformatics applications (such as BLAST and Genscan) can be stitched together into a pipeline so that users can direct the output of one tool (for example, gene predictions using Genscan) to perform further analysis (say, homology searching using BLAST).

Good resource but probably overpriced

This book is more about how to write Java applications that connect to existing systems (such as BLAST) that Bioinformatics and Biomedical professionals already use, rather than how to write Java versions of those systems, the algorithms used in those systems, or algorithms generally relevant to the mentioned fields. While teaching someone to write Java applications that could send data, request service, and parse then display the results received from the queried systems is useful, such a book probably does not warrant such a high price tag as a book that teaches one how to write Java versions of algorithms useful for the Bioinformatics and Biomedical fields.

Finally, a book that introduces bioinformatics using Java. While Perl is great for pattern matching and basic scripting, it is not at all an ideal choice for complex bioinformatics applications at all levels of complexity. Books like this one help train a new generation of bioinformatics experts with a broad-based training in computing (not just Perl scripting).

Estate Planning Made Clear and Effective

The internet is changing the legal profession, as it has so many others. Indeed, author Hargrove is himself at the vanguard of online legal services, but his book makes clear that the more complex issues of estate planning will still require the customized and skillful care of attorneys who specialize in estate planning law. However, for an understanding of the basics and for many of the less complex aspects of passing on assets to your heirs that you can do yourself, this book provides a clear, easy-to-read guide. There is just enough detail to provoke your thinking about how best to approach this necessary task and what questions to ask an attorney, if you conclude that you still need one. The topical chapters are usually only a few pages long, so the reader won't get bogged down in dense legalese. In fact, there is gratefully very little legal speak in the book, which makes it approachable and enjoyable. In fact, many of the chapters deal with topics that are not, in the first instance, legal issues at all: how to save for college, what types of life insurance to consider, passing on a family business, elder care, social security and VA benefits, and even pet care! Hargrove provides anecdotes from his 30 years of practice to help make his points and to stimulate the reader's thinking about his/her own situation. The lawyer jokes are an added bonus! Highly recommend!

Secrets to affordable estate planning

This is not a book about the end of lawyers which is what the title suggests. It's a thought provoking book about ongoing and predicted disruptions in the practice of law and how legal services might be delivered in the future. Hargrove argues, that in the estate planning category many American's are unprepared with end of life directives. Mainly, because they don't want to pay $450 an hour to an attorney when they can go online and do it themselves for much less. Mr. Hargrove has shared how he is making estate planning, once only available to the wealthy, available for all of America's incomes. It's a great business book from someone who has wonderful business acumen and 30 years of helping people achieve what they want to achieve. If you have children. chapter 10 is a must read.

Finally a book that helps everyone with assets!

Estate planning is so critical for protecting the accumulation of assets. If it appears complicated to the average consumer, it is! Chigozie Obioma was born in Akure, Nigeria. His work has appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review, Transition and The Millions, among others. Obioma has lived in Nigeria, Cyprus, and Turkey, and currently resides in the United States, where he teaches Literature and Writing at the University of Nebraska. The Fishermen is his first novel.

A story about stories

I read a lot but I don't write many reviews because, in most cases, other reviewers have already said everything that I would say. With The Fishermen, though, I want to point out that this novel isn't just about Nigeria. This novel provides smart narrative insight into the way that stories affect human lives. The novel, which is set in Nigeria in the 1990s, revolves around a Nigerian family (and the story is also an allegory of Nigeria's political history) but the implications in this novel can be seen in human dynamics anywhere in the world and at any time in history. The narrative is specific but the themes are universal.

The truth is, stories affect us. We become invested in the stories we're told and our investment comes with consequences. The Fisherman brings this truth to light through a vibrant, compelling narrative. At times, I felt sorry for the brothers in this story or I was angry at them. At other times, I was happy for them or hopeful. What's important to me is that, from beginning to end, I always felt something. The Fishermen explored several profound philosophical themes, but the author didn't neglect the characters or sacrifice the basic narrative while looking more deeply into the human condition.

I try to read literary fiction more often than popular fiction because I'm human, so I'm always looking for intellectual growth. Unfortunately, a lot of contemporary literary fiction is more concerned with deploying literary themes than with crafting a strong and compelling narrative. The Fishermen is a wonderful work that doesn't sacrifice entertainment while giving the reader enlightenment. Honestly, I'm awed by Obioma's ability to entertain me and keep me enthralled in the story, while simultaneously giving me philosophical food for thought. The novel is also beautifully written, with language that is poetic without being pretentious. I bought this book for myself on Amazon, but it feels like a gift.

Beautifully written glimpse of a little known culture

This book is excellent. Vey well written.It reminds me of The Kite Runner because of the beautiful, insightful language and insights.Like Kite Runner, this book provides a personal, moving account of a culture that most people know little about. Africa, to most Americans, is still a huge blank spot on the map and the location of Nigeria could not be more vague, let alone it's culture and history. For this alone, the book is a great read, but there is a lot more to it.

I'm going to site some of my favorite sentences so you can get an idea of what I am talking about.

Because things followed this known and structured pattern, no day was worthy of remembrance.

The nauseating sight of algae and leaves that formed the shape of a map of troubled nations...

I have come to believe that it was here that the first mark of the line between Ikenna and Boja--where not even a dot had ever been drawn.
{Mother] owned copies of our minds in the pockets of her own mind...

The amen died off slowly, carried along the rows of the massive graveyard whose language was silence.

NO SPOILER ALERTS! “The Fishermen” by Chigozie Obioma is a story detailing the lives of four brothers as they each react differently to the unwonted prophecy of madman Abulu. From the very beginning their household was raised on the values of unity and education; unity within their family and western education as a means to progress in their society. This was maintained until an abrupt economic advancing opportunity was given to their father, the rock (and disciplinarian) of the house. The father takes this new job position leaving them at the hands of their mother and eldest adolescent brother. Their brother, who himself is not a man, attempts to become the leading figure in their household and is for the time being successful. His brothers look up to him and honor him, even following his lead as they all become fishermen despite the stigma placed on the Omi-Ala River. Just as the Omi-Ala River was once cherished and dependable on by the people of Nigeria so was Ikenna, the eldest brother. The Omi-Ala river is now a public source of ignominy and so will Ikenna be throughout the plot. Ikenna is destined to follow the path of the river as explained by Abulu’s prophecy. One day after leaving the river from fishing, the brothers and an acquaintance are confronted by Abulu who shouts off Ikenna’s prophecy. From then on out Ikenna distances himself from his family and his brothers and goes rogue becoming despicable to those closest to him. The mother, at a disadvantage because of the absence of her husband, tries to keep the frenzy in check but fails. Then the plot takes a turn for the worst. No spoilers! In my opinion, this book was a good one. The details were very specific and added insight to each character’s personality as each of them were described at the beginning of the chapters. Most of the time the things the characters were compared to at the beginning of the chapters foreshadowed future events and motives. Another positive point of the story was that the plot was interesting and kept the reader engaged all while incorporating African culture. Another way African culture was referenced in the book was when the characters used languages other than English to express themselves. A con of this novel was that sometimes the details were so specific that they pulled away from the plot at hand. Because of the intricacies of the details, it sometimes took longer to fully understand them then relate them back to the story as a whole. As far as comparing this book to others of its kind, I haven’t read any others like this. This is the first novel I’ve read on the societal life in African culture. With that being said, this book did open up doors for me to want to read similar books based on African culture and struggles and I’m sure you would too. I definitely would recommend this book for someone to read. Rate: 4 out of 5 stars.

"It Can't Happen" Happens All the Time

Years ago my wife was looking through the books at a Goodwill store, and for a gag gift for my birthday she bought me a volume of poems by Rod McKuen, whose work I do not like. Helen brought it home and was going to wrap it when she looked inside. There was a dedication in the book signed by the author himself: “To Rob - May you always sleep warm. --Rod McKuen.” Now I have a volume of McKuen’s poetry I cannot throw away, but more to the point, how is it possible that completely by chance that she should pick up such a book bearing a dedication to someone of the same name? It just does not seem that such a thing could happen. It’s the sort of story told many times in _The Improbability Principle: Why Coincidences, Miracles, and Rare Events Happen Every Day_ (Scientific American / Farrar, Straus and Giroux) by mathematician David Hand. Hand knows that it is tough to write about mathematics for the layman, perhaps even more so for probability which he says “is renowned for its counterintuitive nature, more than any other area of mathematics. Even the most eminent mathematicians have been tripped up by it.” Yet there are few equations here, there are many astounding stories, and many of Hand’s explanations are drawn from tossing a humble die.

The book starts with its main contradiction, only a seeming contradiction and one of many explained away within these pages: How is it possible that extremely unlikely things happen, and not only happen, but happen over and over? Hand gives satisfying answers, but besides being a book about extraordinarily improbable events, this is also a book that explains probability in general. Take the law of inevitability: Something has to happen. In a lottery, each possible ticket has so tiny a chance of winning that you might think it a miracle if yours is the one chosen. But what _is_ certain is that some ticket will be picked to win (or if not, the stakes will be raised for the next draw when there will be a winner). It is thus dead certain that an improbable event will occur. There’s the law of truly large numbers: if there are enough possible opportunities, any outrageously unlikely event can happen. If you toss a coin enough times, and have a near-eternity to do so, you will get a run of a hundred heads; it simply has to happen. These are understood strictly with probability theory, but we have also to supplement our “understanding” of rare events by human foibles. The law of selection, for instance, says that you can make probabilities as high as you like, in retrospect. It’s like shooting arrows into the side of a barn and then painting bullseyes around each one. All of us are liable, too, to confirmation bias; we notice events that reinforce what we wish to believe and we disregard data that does not fit. Prophets and astrologers harness this tendency all the time. And sometimes we use bad equipment for our research. Federal law has specific and strict rules for every die thrown in a casino, but dice you get in a Monopoly set are far from such strict engineering and they have bias; research into psychokinesis, the ability to control die tosses, has been criticized because it used ordinary dice.

Readers of Hand’s book will have a happy tour of many aspects of probability, delivered by a guide who is knowledgeable and funny. Even if some of the math gets by you, the astonishing stories are sure to impress you, like the ones about people who have won the lottery more than once. Dull as it gets

I've read a lot of books on statistics, both texts for work and more casual books for entertainment value. This is among the worst that I have read.

The examples are dull, recycled, and mostly uninteresting. The concepts seem too basic for the length of the book. And in the end it just is not interesting. Pass on this one.

When I read one star reviews, I often wish the reviewers would tell me what they did enjoy, so that I could calibrate their review and, potentially, so that I could find something better. So here I'll do that. Here are two books of similar nature, both of which are far better than The Improbability Principle:
1, The Drunkard's Walk, by Leonard Mlodinow
2, Fooled by Randomness, by Nassim Taleb

Perception versus Reality: An Excellent Overview

This is a book on statistics but without the mathematical details. The author explains the occurrence of events that one would expect to be extremely rare but, do in fact occur more frequently that anticipated. The author’s “improbably principle”, which is at the heart of this book, is composed of several strands: the law of inevitability, the law of truly large numbers, the law of selection, the law of the probability lever and the law of near enough. These laws are each carefully explained by the author and several useful examples are presented to illustrate each one.

No formulas are used in this book. To be honest, I found that a bit disappointing being an avid mathematics enthusiast. However, it seems clear that the author’s objective is to drive his point home in the simplest and most widely accessible way possible. And in this he succeeds admirably.

The author, a professor of mathematics with specialization in statistics, writes very clearly in a friendly, engaging and often lively style. Because if its wide accessibility, I believe that this book can be enjoyed by any interested readers, no matter what their background. Science and mathematics enthusiasts, like me, although possibly disappointed by the lack of mathematical minutiae, should still be in for a treat. I enjoyed this book immensely.

About the Author
Jean Phillips is a professor of Human Resource Management in the School Labor and Employment Relations at Penn State University. Jean earned her Ph.D. in organizational behavior from Michigan State University. Jean was among the top 5% of published authors in Journal of Applied Psychology and Personnel Psychology during the 1990s, and she received the 2004 Cummings Scholar Award from the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management. Jean has served on multiple editorial boards of top journals and she has published over 30 research articles. She has authored nine books, including Strategic Staffing (3e, 2014), Organizational Behavior (2e, 2013), Human Resource Management (2013), Managing Now (2008), and the five-book Staffing Strategically (2012) series for the Society for Human Resource Management. Jean was also the founding co-editor of the Organizational Behavior/Human Resource Management series for Business Expert Press. She has taught classroom and hybrid classroom/online courses in strategic human resource management, organizational behavior, staffing, and teams and leadership in the United States, Iceland, and Singapore. Her research interests focus on recruitment and staffing, leadership and team effectiveness, and linking organizational survey results to business outcomes.

Stan Gully is a professor of human resource management in the School Labor and Employment Relations at Penn State University. Stan earned his Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from Michigan State University. He is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and has appeared on lists of most influential scholars inside and outside the Academy of Management. He has authored or co-authored numerous research articles, books, and book chapters on a variety of topics, including leadership, team effectiveness, motivation, training, strategic staffing, and recruitment. He has taught undergraduate, master's, Ph.D., and executive classes on a wide variety of topics using traditional and distance learning technologies, both domestically and globally. Professor Gully's applied work includes, but is not limited to, managing at UPS, designing leadership training programs, developing team communication interventions, evaluating predictors of salesperson effectiveness, implementing employee surveys to drive organizational success, and enhancing managerial interviewing and communication skills. This book has changed my life!

I'm 68 years old, forgetting everything, obese and out of shape. I've lost and gained weight so many times I could have made three different people. I didn't feel like doing anything, much less exercise. My nails were non-existent, my hair limp and thinning.

UNTIL I read this book! In three weeks of following this new way of living (it is NOT just a diet!) I've lost 12 lbs, have happily started an exercise program, and have more energy than I've had in years! I'm never hungry, I get to eat all kinds of meats and cheeses and veggies, and I don't even bother counting calories. The supplements he recommends have made an almost instant difference - my nails are stronger and growing long, my skin is better, and my overall mood is vastly improved. This will be my way of life from here on out, and I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It was like taking blinders off, and being able to see again. Thank you, Dr Perlmutter, for this wonderful book, and for the back up help from your website!

Some of this book seems like good advice e

Some of this book seems like good advice e.g. eliminating simple carbs & processed/packaged foods, and switching to high-quality (probably organic) vegetables and high-quality meat & eggs (e.g. genuine PASTURE-raised flesh and PASTURE-raised eggs, not the meaningless "free range chicken" nonsense one sees in stores & on restaurant menus).
Some of this book seems like a big stretch, e.g. the assumptions & proclamations about what our ancestors used to eat (i.e. almost all fatty animal products, very few fruits/vegetables). I consider those statements about the nutritional makeup of our ancestors to be a series of presumptuous, unsupportable statements that should be taken with several grains of salt.
As intellectual & informational balance to Perlmutter, I recommend that all thinking people also read at minimum "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan and "Reversing Diabetes [sic]" by Dr. Neal Barnard.
Not disputing Perlmutter's recommendations, because as I said above, some of his advice IMO has merit, but in a one-year trial I myself have lost most of my visible body fat and achieved blood-chemistry and BMI results as good or better than Perlmutter's ideal goals, by adhering to the strictly whole, plant-based foods, low-fat, low-glycemic-index dietary recommendations proposed by Neal Barnard ("Reversing Diabetes"),T. Colin Campbell ("The China Study") & Caldwell Esselstyn ("Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease"). The only supplements I take are vitamins B12 and D3.
IMO, in "Grain Brain" Perlmutter makes some good points that seem to have merit, but also makes some seemingly unsupportable statements/proclamations that make me raise an eyebrow about following his recommendations unquestioningly. Before going whole-hog for any of these nutrition-for-life books, I highly recommend reading a balance of viewpoints.

My Grain Brain and how my health has come back to me.

What Grain Brain Did for Me

I read the book, Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, MD right before Christmas of 2013. It changed everything I thought I knew about food and its relationship to health. You really should read it. I don’t think we can change how we eat without changing how we feel about food. This book did that for me. I’ve lost (at last check) 18.2 lbs (April 26, 2014), and that’s without exercise, which I’ve never been able to do. It’s also without going around hungry, which all other diets have made me do. You do not count calories or carbs, or fats, or anything. You just eat what’s good for you: Fat - lots of it, meats, vegetables, eggs, cheese, salads, nuts, seeds (my new favorite snack is Pepitas, which they have at Publix). I eat all I want, and when I’ve had enough, that’s it. I eat a lot less than I used to because I’m getting enough fat in my diet, and not stuffing myself with useless breads, crackers, chips, and pasta – which just make me hungrier and hungrier. Of course, you know me – those were my favorites. You could not pay me now to eat that stuff.

Read the book, please! It will change your health, not just the scale. What I’ve gained are increased energy, lots less brain fog, joints moving better (do not hurt all the time), less headaches – a LOT less, tummy troubles are now non-existent, and before, I was always gaseous or had diarrhea, or just was hurting in general. Those are completely gone. Can you imagine not feeling sick at your stomach? I couldn’t either. It was a constant for me, in some form or fashion, ALL THE TIME.

My labs were checked in February, after just two months, and my doc was blown away. I was no longer in the diabetic range and my liver functions had normalized.
