For this entry in the publisher's Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts series, author O'Sullivan has written more than 500 entries for authors and genres as well as a few other topics, such as American Library Association, Ethnocentrism, Newbery Medal, and Wizards. Most of the entries are for authors, from Aesop to Stephenie Meyer. Although the emphasis is on literature in the U.S. and Great Britain, some individuals from other countries, such as Swedish author Astrid Lindgren and Dutch illustrator Dick Bruna, are also included. A handful of entries cover characters, among them Nancy Drew and Thomas the Tank Engine. There are also a few entries for works, such as The Arabian Nights; but in most cases, book titles serve as see references to author entries ("ALICE IN WONDERLAND. See CARROLL, LEWIS"). Preceding the entries are a list of acronyms, a chronology beginning circa 900 and ending in 2008, and an introduction to children's literature and its development....Closing the volume are an appendix of awards and a well-organized bibliography. Providing a concise overview to help the reader understand the historical development of children's literature, this work is recommended for academic and large public libraries. O'Sullivan (Leuphana Univ., L�neburg, Germany) has produced a very nice small dictionary, more compact than the older large-format, single-volume works published a decade ago....O'Sullivan's contribution is...historically focused and wholly authored by one (or two) writers, resulting in a more consistent style. Features include a chronology; a good, brief introduction; an appendix listing winners of some major awards; and an extensive classified bibliography....Some cross-references are included. The main section features A-Z dictionary entries on authors, illustrators, awards, and topics, e.g., "Animal Fiction," "Dime Novels," and "Orphans."...The emphasis is on American, UK, Commonwealth, and European authors. A Must Read for Serious People Who Want to be Debt Free

I just finished reading Anna's book and i really liked it. Not everything relates to me or my debt, but there are tons of tips and ideas in the book that i can use. For example, at the very end she gives you a list of 150 things to do besides spend money including washing your car, write someone a letter, bake cookies, lie in the grass and watch the clouds, pet your cat/dog, go on a hike, Netflix binge, dance, go for a bike ride, etc. I even added a few of my own when i made my own personal list like kiss my kids and call my parents/sibling. It really opened my up to the fact that there really are a billion other things that are better in life than buying something i don't need.

She also discusses the way you will feel so much better once you are out of debt because now you can save more or put money towards a house or vacation or whatever you want. Anna Newell Jones also hits the nail on the head when she mentions that you are going to see your finances differently once you are done fasting and paying off debt.

Before i read this book, i was already in the process of paying down debt my own which has been working just fine, my system just needed a little tweaking... enter Anna's book... and while paying down my own debt i began to see money so differently. Not more important per se, just something that really did matter. I have kids and can't afford to be spending like its my day job because frankly its not. I'm a Navy wife with limited income and bills to pay and so i relate to Anna when she mentioned in the book that you are going to appreciate your money more and be careful what you are buying. The Needs and Wants lists were also dead on. I saw that my husband and I were constantly buying random stuff online, endless drinks at 7/11, tools from Lowe's, not to mention that the weekly Wal-Mart trips were adding up, etc. I had to put an end to it and im glad i did. Now we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and the dream house and dream vacations are almost within reach.

As future "wanna be homesteaders," not having to rely on everyday things like internet, a mortgage, car loans, etc., is a seriously important thing to my family and i see now that i can make this dream happen. Anna's book definitely helped light a fire under my you know what!

A finance book that resonates with me!!

I have been a long time reader of Anna's blog and part of an online group of spend fasters. The book is written in a tone that is tough, patient and most of all supportive. Anna is nothing short of inspirational and helpful and the information contained hits home and works!!! To the other reviewer - I've read a few Dave Ramsey books and it's folly to even compare the two. Two different tones, two different target audiences and two different people. There is room for both in the genre but I know which one I'd prefer...

Useful and Authentic

There is a lot I like about this book. First: the author, Anna Newell Jones, cusses appropriately and in moderation when talking about how to get out of debt, and uses language in a conversational manner that at times made me feel like I was having a warm-hearten chat over coffee with a friend. That is something I have not seen by any other author on the subject of debt, let alone money in general. Second: this book is not about a single, rigid, prescription of getting out of debt; it goes through options that the reader is supposed to tailor to one's own situation in providing examples of behavior change, which is extremely helpful for my own case. Third: Anna is a blogger that I have been following for several years, and her book is not an exact replication of blog posts over a period of time. The resources she provides are concrete and useful. I strongly recommend this book to people who feel caught up in the rat race and are looking for real-life options for how to become debt-free.

About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean’s Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School’s finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California.

Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and Gatton Research Fellow in the Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. He has a long-standing interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance, and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. Professor Jordan has published numerous articles on issues such as cost of capital, capital structure, and the behavior of security prices.

Doesn't explain concepts thoroughly enough

This book has me very frustrated, if I had not taken accounting before hand this book would be very hard to understand and learn concepts from.

1. Like someone else has said, it doesn't do a very good job of explaining how to do things, it will give little tidbits and make you figure it out yourself.

2. If you don't have any experience with finance classes DO NOT GET THIS BOOK OR TAKE A CLASS THAT USES THIS BOOK, you'll learn, but slowly and painfully, and you'll probably end up burning your book before you finish it.

3. The ink is terrible smudging everywhere, make sure you don't have any oils on your hands or the ink will smudge all over the place, which is easy to do with a frustrating book like this.

I don't like the dry humor in it either (Besides wanting to pass this class, why is understanding the concept of X important)

I don't know if that's dry humor or just plain bad humor, don't put it in college text it looks unprofessional and just makes me more pissed off at the authors.

Kindle Version = No Page Numbers

If you get the Kindle version, and the prof. assigned problems 1 - 5 on p45, good luck feeling confident you are doing the correct homework! The Kindle version does not have page numbers. Apparently software version 3.1 for the kindle does support page numbers, but only on certain books, not including this one.

I am really disappointed by what I received.
It is not a book but a "special blinder-ready version" which means it is not as easy to use as a book.
I didn't know it before buying this item.

Stella Wilkinson is a full time author with eight books currently available, plus three anthologies that she collated and edited for a children's hospital charity. It was ok

The ending was a bit too abrupt between the 3 main couples: Byron and Jessica, Gabe and Flora, Reed and Bianca. It felt like I skipped a couple of pages (which I did not). It was like "wait! What happened? How did he come to that conclusion or final action.". And especially in Gabe and Flora's case I was expecting so much more development. I've waited for them for so long!!!! Wanted to see him in details fall in love, struggle and fight against those feelings, and finally give in because he just "adore" her that much (he used that exact word. But it didn't feel like it because i couldn't see the development of his feelings bringing him to that conclusion." A bit disappointed... There was too much going on and not enough pages to develop each story.

Death be not proud

This book is based on a series of lectures on 'Death' Kagan gave in Yale University. These lectures and in fact this book can be seen on YouTube.
Kagan introduces the book by making it clear what he is and his not doing. He is going to think philosophically about Death but he is going to exclude any religious material or consideration. He will first consider what the person is, consider the body- mind question. He will make an effort in the work to prove that the soul is not real.
He also says that he is not dogmatically trying to teach any doctrine about Death. He is going to explore certain basic questions regarding Death and is eager that each student will think through these questions.
He does this in a generally clear way, though I suspect that certain chapters of the work will be pretty tough going for the general reader.
He works hard to analyze the notion of personal identity. He concludes the work with the question of whether Suicide can be moral or not. He in the course of this evaluates different value systems. He also has a chapter on how we live when we know that we are going to die. And he too argues that Immortality is not a desirable alternative. In other chapters he discusses why Death is Bad.
It is possible to learn a great deal one does not necessarily want to know from this book without endorsing Kagan's positions. Kagan is well aware that this is far from the last word on the subject. And this when he as a philosopher does make arguments for a position on Death which certainly is out of keeping with, and far less consoling than traditional religious positions.

Grim subject, awesome philosopher

Something defined as bad is defined by either one of three means. (Intrinsically, Instrumentally, Comparatively)

Intrinsic:
Shelly tells us that some things are intrinsically bad. That is, some things, such as pain for example are bad in and of itself.

Instrumentally:
If something that leads to things that are bad, that is considered instrumentally bad. He cites losing a job which may not be bad in and of itself but can lead to poverty.

Comparatively:
Something can be comparatively bad by virtue of the fact that on what we have missed out on. It is in this sense that death is bad since the "opportunity costs" of living far outweigh non-existence. In a sense reminds me of the verse in the bible that says "a living dog is better than a dead lion".

Shelly writes in a very conversational tone while philosophizing on the nature of death, considering words and arguments in the light of what we currently know. Arguments in favor of the immortality of the soul are laid out, examined, and shown to not have any real merit. What Shelly advances, seems to be common sense about death. And understanding death can perhaps take the sting out of it when we face it. When I was going through my cancer treatment years ago, I would have been less anxious than I was if I had read this book over having read "The Death of Ivan Illich", which is extremely depressing.

We all have to face the end someday, and thinking about it as Shelly lays it out can make this life, our ONLY life meaningful. When you realize how short our years are, and the fact that no immortality awaits us, this to me underscores our responsibility to be nicer to each other, appreciate life on higher levels, love a little more, be ethical in all that we do.
