Yakuza: Japan's Criminal Underworld, by David E. Kaplan, Alec Dubro

Known for their striking full-body tattoos and severed fingertips, Japan's gangsters comprise a criminal class eighty thousand strong--more than four times the size of the American mafia. Despite their criminal nature, the yakuza are accepted by fellow Japanese to a degree guaranteed to shock most Westerners. Yakuza is the first book to reveal the extraordinary reach of Japan's Mafia. Originally published in 1986, it was so controversial in Japan that it could not be published there for five years. But in the west it has long served as the standard reference on Japanese organized crime and has inspired novels, screenplays, and criminal investigations. This twenty-fifth anniversary edition tells the full story or Japan's remarkable crime syndicates, from their feudal start as bands of medieval outlaws to their emergence as billion-dollar investors in real estate, big business, art, and more.

Solid Reference Work--Need Same for US
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
This is a solid reference work, and expands and updates on the earlier work that was itself a classic. It examines structured corruption in which organized crime, organized politics, and secretive corporate conglomerates, all help one another become wealthy at the expense of the public.
There are a number of fine points across the book that merit emphasis here, and one of the earliest is that of how the CIA and the Army G-2 deliberately nurtured Japanese criminal organizations during the occupation, because they were "anti-communist."
There is an excellent section of the book that focuses on how the US government fostering of political corruption in Japan in turn led to US corporate corruption, to include the funding of separate US corporate foreign policies anti-thetical to those Congress was trying to foster in the days before Congress abdicated its responsibilities.
Lee Kuan Yew would like this book. He says the only antidote to organized crime is strong extended families--natural families whose kinship equates to ethics. The book documents the spread of crime in Japan to every aspect of life, and one can only be saddened to see how the concepts of samurai honor and loyalty have been turned upside down.
Three ideas keep running through my mind as I read the book, two of them from the author and the third my own. First, the authors focused on the importance of following the money. He knew and wrote about this in the mid-1980's, but today the US Government is still marginally able to follow money, especially informal money that the FBI only discovered in the late 1990's with help from Dick Clarke (see my review of "Against All Enemies"). Following the money is *the* intelligence challenge of the 21st Century, and it is not something CIA can do--we have to find means of integrating all seven tribes, and especially business and banks as well as law enforcement at every level. Second, the author documents the weakness of Japanese law enforcement in a manner that highlights the weakness of US law enforcement at the state and local levels. Think of this book as traveling back in time to Japan, and then forward in time to the US, where we are now suffering many of the same problems. Finally, being a fan of Special Operations properly done, I realized that 21st Century warfare is going to be about man-hunts. It is going to be about tribal and criminal orders of battle, and about decapitating terrorist and criminal gangs without mercy.
The book spends some time on how US forces overseas are in fact a major stimulant and catalyst for crime, especially drugs and trade in women and children. By sending our forces and their money into austere conditions, we have actually created 750 "crime magnets" all over the world. And if you think our secret bases overseas are secret from anyone other than the US public, think again--one has only to ask the prostitutes. There is another important aspect of GI (Government Issue) life overseas: too many of our naive GI's get sucked into crime, first from small loans, then being asked to smuggle small things, then big things, to pay off the loan, and then being tracked down, after returning home, to be brought into international crime within the USA. I realized from this that DoD needs a crime counterintelligence and amnesty program, and we need to out-brief every GI on how to handle criminal blackmail when they encounter it, both overseas, at home, and post-service.
The book ends with a fascinating and thoughtfully-selected series of vignettes on the spread of Yakuza crime to 21 countries. The study of their passports is especially interesting, and makes us wonder why the US Treasury is still spending most of its time, two years after 9-11, trying to harass those trading with Cuba, instead of going after terrorist and criminal money.
Toward the end of the book there is a useful professional discussion of how inept governments are at identifying correct names and name variants when trying to spot and monitor criminals. This is a real problem. Within the US Intelligence Community, there is no standard for international names, each agency doing its own thing, with the result that even if we were to connect all the databases, the decades of unstandardized data entry across the archipelago makes many of our records too hard to use--almost as if we have to start from scratch.
One final point that really jumped out at me: the authors do a great job of identifying the real experts on Yakuza, across many countries, and what struck me was that they exist but no one has figured out how to create a virtual community of interest with the Internet such that all of them are security in touch with one another, sharing name databases, libraries, photograph archives, etcetera. The obsession with secrecy and national control remains the greatest obstacle to actually doing well against crime, and we appear to need regional information sharing systems that are NOT secret (just secure), and multinational regional "stations" against crime.
Closing comment: the book documents the incompetence of the US approach to manning its Embassies, especially in the law enforcement arena, where individuals are not language qualified, have no idea of the culture or history, and rotate every two years just as they are finally getting wise. We need a "long haul" manning strategy, and in my view should start thinking in terms of 10-year assignments with every second person coming in at the 5-year mark for solid continuity of intelligence and counterintelligence against these clear and present threats to national security and prosperity.
Outstanding book. A classic relevant to any country, any business, any government, at any level.

A Thorough and Excellent Study
By Matthew Clark
I have been interested in the topic of transnational organized crime for about four years now. Most research on the topic that you will find today concentrates on the more sensational groups like the Russian (Eurasian) groups, the Colombian drug trafficking organizations, and of course the "traditional" OC groups from Sicily and mainland Italy. Very little work has focused exclusively on Asian groups, most especially the Yakuza. Kaplan and Dubro's work helps to fill that gap immensely. Their work is undoubtedly the best material on the Yakuza available. For a more comprehensive look at Asian OC in general, Bertil Lintner's "Blood Brothers" is excellent as well.

An Underworld Education
By Johnny Anarchy
"Yakuza: Japan's Criminal Underworld" is a book that is almost criminally enthralling.

In the United States the world of organized crime tends to be viewed as entirely exclusive to Anglo-European or Eastern European groups. Whether it be the Cosa Nostra or the Armenian mob little is generally known about the criminal organizations of the East. Particularly Japan's Yakuza.

How many of you knew that the pervasiveness of methanphetamines throughout the world is thanks to the Yakuza? Also, how many of you knew that the Yakuza is so widely integrated into Japanese society that they have often held press conferences announcing the end of gang conflicts or that they even have their own offices? How many of you knew that the Yakuza was allowed to survive and thrive after WWII thanks to the American occupation of Japan? Did you also know that the CIA employed some Yakuza as spies against the left wing in Japan after the war? ...and that these same people that they employed and let gain power...were the same people they put in prison for Class A war crimes?

These are just a few of the interesting and altogether jaw-dropping facts you'll learn by reading this book, a very thoroughly researched study on the fairly little known but globally expansive criminal organizations of Japan. If there aren't at least a dozen parts in this book that don't shock and amaze you I would be very surprised. I could go on and on about all of the interesting facts on the Yakuza covered in this book (from its vaguely noble beginnings to its rather uncertain future) but I think if you are interested in knowing about them you should read this book firsthand. You will NOT be disappointed.

A fantastic book.

Among these services are counseling, consulting, and other functions performed by professional school counselors. While some books may deemphasize the important role of school counselors and the contributions they can make to the overall educational program, this book not only explains the importance of school counseling and what can be done by counselors, but also how counselors and school can provide these services effectively. The School Counselor's Bible
By Rocco B. Rubino
There is an acute public health crisis in this nation; a crisis precipitated by the burden of suffering experienced by children with mental health needs, and their families.

Child abuse, family dysfunction, economic dislocation, and the prevalence of violence, sex, and the objectification of woment in our popular culture all influence childrens' lives each day. Children represent 100% of our future. Therefore fostering social and emotional health in children as a component of healthy child development must be a national priority.

Saladin: The Politics of the Holy War (University of Cambridge Oriental Publications No. 30), by Malcolm Cameron Lyons, D. E. P. Jackson

Saladin is one of the best known figures of the Middle Ages, and this study makes use of hitherto neglected Arabic sources, including unpublished manuscript material - -notably the correspondence, both private and official, of Saladin's own court -to set the whole of Saladin's career and achievements, civil and military, within the specific framework of his age.

Review
'Lyons and Jackson have produced a distinguished and extremely well researched book which is likely to become a standard work in the field and become required reading for all students of Ayyubid history. it has the added merit of being accessible, as the authors themselves intend, to the non-Arab historian: despite its wealth of documentation and factual description it reads easily and will be readily understood by the non-specialist.' Good solid work
By Brian Hawkinson
This is, to say the least, not a book for the lay person to pick for a casual read. The work is thorough and detailed, starting from beginning to end to how Saladin came into and held onto power.

I knew going into this biography that it would be difficult reading the Arabic names and places, so nothing new there. I must say that I was impressed with how the point of view remained with Saladin the whole time, using Arabic sources instead of western (other than William of Tyre), and didn't waiver when Saladin came into contact with Richard the Lionhearted and so on. All to often authors tend to naturally revert to the western point of view rather than understand Saladin for what he was, a Muslim, which helps us better understand who he was.

My only complaint would have to be the same as the other reviewer, that the maps were not included during the reading (it would have been great to have the map at the beginning of each chapter for the time being discussed) and a list of the whose who and their relation to Saladin. Lyons would mention an Arabic ruler and I couldn't place where he ruled and why he threatened Saladin because of how the names are so alien, which causes the western reader to not easily remember.

Other than those two things, I think this is a great read for the amateur as well as the professional historian, adding a valuable source of information, if not being the best, to what we know of Saladin. Push past the dry, scholarly feel of the book and you have a wealth of information.

Saladin's Life at War
By Samuel J. Sharp
Lyons's and Jackson's "Saladin" is the product of impressive scholarship, but less impressive writing. As other reviewers have noted, the author's keep a tight focus on Saladin's activities. The book contains sometimes day-by-day accounts of marches, but never zooms out to put Saladin's actions in broader focus. Crusader armies or Sicilian fleets appear on the scene but the reader is provided no sense of why they are there. The authors eventually relent and provide some analysis in the final chapter, but I am afraid most readers will not make it that far. Hindley's "Saladin: Hero of Islam" may be a better choice for newcomers to this period in history.

One of the best biographies of Saladin
By Albnas
This is definitely not a book for someone who has just started learning about the Crusades: from the very first page it assumes the reader has a good knowledge about events, places and names; if you don't, you will miss a lot since the writers are not concerned about explaining who's who, in particular among the Franks. It's not a book for casual reading either: I read it as serious studying, making notes, underlining important passages and occasionally re-reading a whole page just to make sure I got it right. This is a book for a reader who wants to learn the details that made Saladin one of the most preeminent figures in the history of the Crusades. Half of it describes his ability unifying Islam (basically, Egypt and Syria) by creating alliances or, when they failed, fighting other Muslim leaders with the final goal of defeating the Christians. The book's second half describes his campaigns against the Franks which ultimately led to the fall of Jerusalem and the conquest of most of the Christian cities in the Holy Land. The authors, Lyons & Jackson, based their research on tens (if not hundreds) of letters written by Saladin himself and his contemporaries for a period over 40 years detailing the political game that made him a victorious leader. The authors also refer to the writings of the most important Western commentators of that time (William of Tyre, in particular), but this is definitely a book written from a Muslim perspective. The authors do a very good and impartial job pointing out Saladin's successes and failures through the Arab eyes and, when there's conflict between several sources, they express their own opinion based on a reasonable analysis of the facts. Saladin was unquestionably a great leader but as all leaders in History he had his weaknesses, fears and moments of indecision. The book doesn't try to create a superhero but shows a man who had the ability to patiently gather tens of local Arab leaders with their own personal agendas, showing generosity when possible and ruthlessness when necessary. It is this quality that perhaps made several experts to consider Lyons & Jackson's work probably the best biography of him.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In Atta's spirited and largehearted second novel (after the collection, News from Home), two young woman office workers navigate the rapids of the urban jungle of Lagos. Rose, and the narrator, Tolani, live and work together, making the long, arduous daily commute by bus and sharing "seats, sweat, and gossip." They often don't agree: Rose, at 30, flits from man to man to avoid falling into what she calls "the black hole" of dependency and inertia, and disapproves of Tolani's longtime boyfriend, Sanwo, who won't propose. However, Rose's irrepressible temper gets her fired, leaving her vulnerable to the manipulation of a new boyfriend, OC, who convinces her to mule drugs to England. Tolani has her own woes: she breaks up with Sanwo after he loses her savings; she has to work with a new, lecherous boss; her aging mother is ever more fragile; and she learns her father, now dead, may not have actually been her father. But will she take OC up on his offer of quick money? Tolani's tale encompasses towns and villages, corruption and superstition, deceit and loyalty, all beautifully layered and building toward a wallop you never see coming. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Nigerian-born Atta, now living in the U.S., excels at telling stories of her native land, this time centering on bank clerk Tolani Ajao and Rose, her friend, roommate, and colleague at Federal Community Bank in Lagos, with interspersed accounts by Tolani’s mother, Arike, in her native village of Makoku. After Rose is fired for slapping her boss, Tolani gets her job and puts the man on notice when he sexually harasses her, displaying the same strength her mother showed as a young woman who shocked townspeople by riding a Vespa in her village. With Rose out of work and Tolani suspended, they consider drug running to make ends meet. As Tolani struggles with the morality of being a mule and the difficulty in swallowing the contraband, she must also deal with her boyfriend, who has lost her savings, while being haunted by questions of her own parentage. Atta captures the sights, sounds, and smells of her native land in the 1980s, with its War against Indiscipline in effect, as it straddles Western ways and native customs. A meandering novel with a painful punch. --Michele Leber

Review
"In this unique novel, outstanding new literary talent Sefi Atta takes great strides in style and form, to bring wit and passion to the heartbreaking story of Tolani and Rose, two young women struggling, not always successfully, to make an honest living in contemporary Nigeria... Atta tells in an eminently readable voice the irreconcilable nature of the two friends' fates." --Tsitsi Dangarembga, author of Nervous Conditions

"Tender, fierce, vivid and memorable -- a bold, distinctive novel from a writer who doesn't compromise her integrity." --Leila Aboulela, author of Minaret

"Sefi Atta has woven a quietly intricate powerful tale that pulls from problems of gender, class, and Lagosian life. It's a novel whose many colorful characters, compelling story, distinct place and turbulent time will stay with you long after you've read the last word." --Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu, author of Zahrah the Windseeker

"No contemporary Nigerian writer is better than Sefi Atta at evoking the smells, sounds and the sheer madness of this sprawling cosmopolitan city of Lagos." --Toni Kan Onwordi, author of Nights of the Creaking Bed

"The bustle, chaos and fast rhythm of Lagos jump from the pages of Swallow, Sefi Atta's new book. It is fiction steeped in life." --Veronique Tadjo, author of As the Crow Flies

Sefi Atta's novel is a literary gem.
By Joy Cagil
Tolani is a single woman living with a roommate, Rose, in Lagos, Nigeria. In the beginning of the story, both women work in the same office where red tape, biases, and corruption abound. Rose is fired and Tolani is made to take her place with Rose's immoral boss, Mr. Salako. Besides the relationship of these two women, Tolani's mother's story seeps intermittently into the plot, giving it even more depth.

Later, while Rose takes up with a drug dealer, Tolani loses her boyfriend. What happens to these two women at the end of the story, and more so, what happens internally to Tolani is a powerful tale. It addresses women's psychological struggles and their fights to find their rightful place in a corrupt society.

This book was an eye-opener for me. I knew little if nothing about Nigeria, about its tribal prejudices, city and country life, civil war, and corruption in government and society, but I was especially impressed by the uniquely strong women in the story, strong despite superstition, social prejudice, and difficult everyday life, and also, I thought their camaraderie despite everything was truly awesome.

What most pleases me about this novel is its skillful portrayal of fully developed characters. It is those characters that carry the plot through the minute details of everyday life. In the hands of a lesser writer, this story could have been a bore, but Sefi Atta's pen has made it a literary winner.

Swallow Review
By Erinwp
In her novel Swallow, Sefi Atta gives us the story of Tolani Ajao and her obstinate friend and roommate Rose. Tolani and Rose are two women living in Lagos, Nigeria during the eighties, and the story follows their struggles to survive in an urban world that is adverse to women and hostile towards all.
From its very beginning the novel impresses us with the dangers of transportation, both public and private, in Lagos. The bus carrying the narrator, Tolani, and Rose nearly overturns, flinging its screaming passengers and conductor about before righting itself and carrying on with its journey as if nothing ever happened. This is only one of many stories illuminating the perils of the road in Lagos, and the characters are quick to turn their attention back to more important matters. Unpleasant bus rides and the stench, danger, and discomfort of public transport is evident throughout the novel, as it is in much of Nigerian fiction, but this particular incident sets the tone for the novel as a whole and seems to reflect more than the various incidents of public transport. The novel is filled with sudden shocks of danger and distress, and Tolani is in a constant struggle to regain her balance and to find satisfaction in a life that seems consistently willing to crush her.
The daughter of a famous drummer, Tolani comes from the small town of Makoku. Once a predominant farming community ruled by a royal family, the Makoku of Tolani's youth -- and especially that of her mother's youth -- has transformed into a place filled with service businesses, shrinking farms, and diminished forests. The main story narrated by Tolani is interspersed with pieces of Tolani's mother's story and the Makoku she grew up in with Tolani's father. Arike (Tolani's mother) narrates these fragments of her past which serve to illuminate the transition of Makoku towards the present and make sense of both her and Tolani's past and present circumstances.
Both Tolani and Arike's stories involve their separate efforts towards bettering themselves and their possible futures in a place and time where independent women are met with suspicion and malice -- especially for Arike. In Lagos, Tolani attempts to deal with her relationship issues with Sanwo, her boyfriend of over two years who continues to evade marrying her despite his own promises and her pressures. Tolani's boss, Mr. Salako, has recently fired Rose and forced Tolani into her old position. Mr. Salako is basically your typical scumbag-boss type -- perverted, overtly pretentious and self-centered , and completely ignorant -- and he has taken it upon himself to make Tolani's job as difficult as possible. All the while Rose is at home, now unemployed and spending her days on the couch, much to Tolani's uneasiness and aggravation.
Poverty and disappointment eventually drive both women towards the offers of a wealthy drug trafficker, leaving Tolani questioning the direction her life is taking and striving to find a moral footing in a place where honor is reserved for the rich and morality requires payment in Naira. The bulk of the novel is devoted towards Tolani's journey to find herself and a path towards future happiness and contentment with the past.
Although much of the novel is unique to the experiences of Nigeria and centers around the sights, smells, dangers, and details of Lagos, its themes also speak to the universal. The struggle to find oneself as a woman in a male dominated world is something I think most women can relate to -- albeit on different levels -- and the difficulty of coming to terms with the skeletons of ones past and finding a path towards the future is equally relatable. Sefi Atta makes the tensions between the traditional and the contemporary, between the city and the village, and between the individual and the crushing pressures of life are both universally relatable and uniquely Nigerian.
Some might find the plot of the novel boring -- many things happen and yet it seems that nothing really happens. The story is focused much more on character development than compelling plot-line, and the lack of identifiable chapter breaks can be quite exhausting. However, Atta's style and prose are excellent and the way she has sutured together the drama-filled stories of her characters keeps the novel flowing and readable.

Tells the story of two Nigerian women facing a world that seems to hate them and treat them as second class citizens
By Midwest Book Review
With the weight of the world on one's shoulders, enduring it can be quite the endeavor. "Swallow" tells the story of two Nigerian women facing a world that seems to hate them and treat them as second class citizens. Tolani and Rose provide the protagonists of Sefi Atta's story, as they both face their own unique paths in their life to deal with their bad lot. Engaging and thoughtful, Atta's "Swallow" is sure to receive the same acclaim as her previous novel and short story collection, granting it a very high recommendation.

Do You Talk Funny?: 7 Comedy Habits to Become a Better (and Funnier) Public Speaker, by David Nihill

Public speaking can be terrifying. For David Nihill, the idea of standing in front of an audience was scarier than cliff jumping into a thorny pit of spiders and mothers-in-law. Without a parachute or advanced weaponry. Something had to change.

In what doesn’t sound like the best plan ever, David decided to overcome his fears by pretending to be an accomplished comedian called "Irish Dave" for one full year, crashing as many comedy clubs, festivals, and shows as possible. One part of the plan was at least logical: he was already Irish and already called Dave.

In one year, David went from being deathly afraid of public speaking to hosting a business conference, regularly performing stand-up comedy and winning storytelling competitions in front of packed houses. And he did it by learning from some of the best public speakers in the world: stand-up comedians.

Do You Talk Funny?: 7 Comedy Habits to Become a Better (and Funnier) Public Speaker shows how the key principles of stand-up comedy can be applied to your speaking engagements and presentations to make you funnier, more interesting, and better looking. (Or at least two of the three.) Highly Recommended

Full Disclosure: I received an advance copy for the price of an honest review.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. First, it's well-edited and logically presented. As a technical writer and editor by trade and by nature, that really DOES matter to me. Nothing makes me question the validity of an advice book more than poor editing and awkward organization. I can't relax and enjoy poorly presented writing of any kind.

Yes, the book really IS funny. But more than that, the author gives clear, actionable steps for crafting humorous presentations--extremely valuable for those of us who speak in public. I also appreciate that the author shared his own fears of public speaking. He isn't one of those people who lives to stand in front of an audience. He started his public speaking journey just like the rest of us do--it came with a job. In his case, the job was a task he'd set for himself--helping a friend in need. I found it so easy to relate to his journey because all of the public speaking I've had to do has been job related.

The other thing I appreciated about this book is how well the author shows that humorous public speaking requires actual WORK. No one will become funnier simply because of reading this book. However, anyone who follows the advice and exercises in the book will be able to better engage their audiences through artful use of humor.

A Review that's Not From His Family
By Ryan A Bell
I feel a little dumb for putting 5 stars when EVERY damn body does. Maybe they all know David or they're family or something. I'm not. I've seen him speak at his FunnyBiz event and that's what got me hooked. I'm a very minor public figure and I've attained this status through blood, guts, paid advertising and bald faced lies. I also used some of the ideas in this book to balance out my business hilarity. Read this. Follow David. Think funnier. It doesn't matter if you're a cubicle dummy or an internet dummy or a sales dummy, this book will help you in your career.
I wanna end with a joke but whatever... I'm just gonna leave this all limp and hangy. Still you should buy it.... you shoulda seen me before this.

If you find yourself in front of people, find this book on your shelf
By musicalsoup
As a trainer who has taught others how to present, I thought this book would offer very little for me to learn. To say I was hugely mistaken, is no exaggeration.
David magically weaves business, humor, tragedy, and action into this brilliant read. He draws from marketing masters like Seth Godin and Gary Vaynerchuk, comedy masters like Jerry Seinfeld and Matt Groening, and literary masters like Mark Twain and William Shakespeare to show you how to deliver your message - regardless of the topic.
Of course, "what you say" is only a part of the delivery equation. David also serves up unconventional advice on managing your crowd, the clock, the stage, interruptions, and your body. Through countless delivery experiences, David bares his soul with honest analysis of his surprising successes and painful failures.
When your journey is over, you will have dissected and reassembled story telling, joke delivery, and TED talks. But you don't just get the theory; you get actionable steps. These end-of-section exercises were a welcome surprise and were the cherry on top for me - allowing me to not just see what makes effective deliveries, but experience it and hone my own deliveries.
You will smile. You will cringe. But most importantly, you WILL become a more effective presenter with this book.

To Be or Not to Bop: Memorias de Dizzy Gillespie (Biorritmos) (Spanish Edition), by Dizzy Gillespie, Al Fraser

This biography of Dizzy Gillespie combines the jazz legend’s own story with the testimonies of those who knew him. From his days in South Carolina through his later years as a venerated elder statesman, his role inthe development of bebop, his time as a bandleader, and his involvement in the Afro-Cuban music movementare discussed. Al Fraser interviews contemporaries of Gillespie’s including Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Thelonious Monk, and Gillespie himself examines his relationships with other jazz heavyweights such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker. This is the self-portrait of a man who gave himself over completely to his work and who approached life with a persistent and irreverent sense of humor, as well as a history of African American music during an incendiary time.
