Very entertaining Roman thriller

The second in this new Roman series sits within a pretty crowded market and some very well-known authors. I enjoyed the first book and this follow up is just as good.

Young and slightly naive Cassius Corbulo is an Imperial agent, not by choice, more by circumstance. He is smart but no great sword fighter and in many situations lacks confidence or gravitas which does make a refreshing change. In this book he continues to be aided by his servant Sumo (and again the author avoids the trap of them treating each-other as equals) and a taciturn ex Gladiator who is along as a bodyguard. The three of them are on the trail of some stolen treasure and an Imperial Banner that must be recovered.

So we share the adventures of our trio as they doggedly follow the trail of theft, murder and treachery.

It works on a number of levels as the characters have depth and, especially in the case of Cassius, have their flaws that they manage through. In addition the dynamics between the main three characters is always entertaining and this helpd make this a fun and entertaining romp.

Not what I expected, but a great read!

They say not to judge a book by its cover. This is not a sword and glory novel, it is more along the lines of espionage or mystery and it really works well. In this second of the series we see the main protagonist Cassius fleshed out and while not exactly James Bond of the Legionary set, it still had me engrossed throughout. Brown also introduces another character, the bodyguard former gladiator who works well in the tale. The ancient city of Antioch is brought to life and could almost be considered a main character too as it is richly woven into the second half of the book. Overall an enjoyable, comfortable way to spend some hours being transported back in time... Can't wait to dive into the next in the series, The Far Shore, as soon as I click Send!

A new Roman series that's thoroughly entertaining

This exciting new series stands-out within a highly competitive, crowded genre alongside authors such as Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow and Conn Iggulden to name but a few. Unlike the merciless warrior `hero' figure of Cassius in the majority of fiction, here the author portrays this icon in a new light and altogether different angle. The slant taken on the Roman fighter is one of secret service as a spy; an entirely original concept that's unexpected and intriguing. This detective type story takes you on a thrilling adventure with epic battles and treasure hunts, reminiscent of "The Eagle" versus a contemporary crime saga! Full of twists & turns in the plot, shocking secrets and unforeseen unfolding events...I can predict this series becoming something of a sensation.

It's ultimately the characters that make this gripping tale so fascinating to read and colourful - from Cassius' servant Simo, his bodyguard Indavara and the ex-gladiator. This tantalizing trio on the trail for the Imperial banner were full of depth, and I loved their interaction amongst themselves throughout the book. Murder and treachery within an authentic, atmospheric setting makes this historical novel a winner in my mind and a sure-fire success as a sequel! Although this is part of a series it is also a book that likewise can be read as a `stand alone' novel.

Book 2 in the Agent of Rome series is a spectacular story and one that I would highly recommend to fans of this genre, as something new and highly imaginative. Rich backdrops and likeable characters make this unusual tale something truly unforgettable. I am so pleased to have won a copy of Nick Brown's book {through a GoodReads, first-read giveaway} and I look forward to reading and discovering more of his work.

Amazon Description Error in our Favor!

A great piece of work! The amazon description is wrong though as this volume collects issues 0, 85, and 90-100 plus the 2 part Legends of the DC Universe #4-5. Amazon is using the description from Wonder Woman The Contest which only collects the 1st half of Deodato's run. This volume contains the entire run and is way more read for your dollars!

Great story and amazing art work

Wonder Woman by Mike Deodato includes Wonder Woman #85, 0, 90-100 and Legends of The DC Universe 4 &5. Amazon and Previews description is incomplete. This story arc includes The Contest and Challenge Of Artemis. Great story and amazing art work. Very 90’s. What I don’t undersatand is why place chapter 85 after chapter 100 if this one is part of the sequence of the story. The two Legends chapters are not interesting, but the art is beautiful. Love it and recommend it 100%!
Amazon send the book in an envelope instead if the usual box. The mailman bends part of the envelope to put it in a mailbox made only for letter size envelopes! Anyway, there was no damage to the book

If your a fan of wonder woman this is something u will want for your collection..this is a fantastic story that introduces us to Artemis and shows us the 2nd contest were diana is striped of the wonder woman title...Also we learn at this time the fact that on Paradise Island Diana does not have her active powers and we see how artemis reacts to having the sandals of hermes and the Gauntlet of Atlas..Now what I really love is the Costume redesign with the jacket and the look...I for one loved it and I loved the fact that even though she is not wonder woman she still has the symbol because of a pledge she made to her name sake...Fantastic

a must have for step 2 CK

I used the first edition of this book for step 2 CK. It was my only and main study tool while i prepared for CK. I went through it 3 times before my test. went thru the high yield questions. I experienced a 20 point increase from my scores in step 1 and 2.
I highly recommend this. with the added high yield images,this book is a MUST HAVE!.

This book is concise and to the point. It offers more details than master the board or first aid. This should be the primary source for step 2 and 3. This book has what it takes to do well on this exam!

Excellent resource book to supplement your studies for Step 2CK. Needs a bit of editing, but nothing major. You can tell it's written by doctors, which is what you want. Best book I've purchased so far!

Srinagar was dressed in her autumn best. Like blushing brides, the trees were clothed in bright red, their graceful limbs swaying eagerly forth in the wind, and then, as if suddenly recalling their modesty, holding back just a bit.

A good story, but much longer than it should have been. Many chapters repeated the same ideas.

Lucas is on the hunt for revenge against the people who tried to murder him a year ago. He is devastated that one of those people is the woman he had loved so deeply, but he's determined not to let his emotions stop him. When he is attacked from all sides by the same group who tried to murder him before, Katerina and her band of renegades race into the fight to save him. Although he is reluctant to believe Katerina's claims of innocence, Lucas decides to work with Katerina and her men to get revenge on the people who have stolen her castle... the same people who thought they had beaten him to death a year ago. Katerina is determined to convince Lucas that she took no part in that plot to kill him. Lucas is determined to find the truth. Despite their differences, Lucas and Katerina can't deny their hunger for each other.

Hannah Howell's books tend to run either hot or cold. This one was lukewarm. I liked the fact that the story took place in a unique setting. Throughout most of the book, they are living in underground caves. A nice switch from the usual castle scenery. Also, the hero and heroine are both strong, but they are not written to be invincible. Both suffered physical and emotional injuries in their pasts and during the story itself.

Unfortunately, Hannah Howell tends to drag out the "He doesn't really love me."/ "She doesn't really love me." theme in her books. This one took it to an extreme. Lucas spends weeks next to Katerina's bed while fighting to keep her alive as she is racked with fever from injuries, but she can't decide if he really cares. Katerina rides into a sword fight to take Lucas to safety, but he's sure she doesn't really love him. After the villains are killed, there are actually 4 whole chapters spent on dragging out the idea that Lucas and Katerina each think the other doesn't really care. I skimmed the last 3 chapters, but I could tell I didn't miss anything when I read the epilogue.

You just gotta love a Highlander story!

It's been a year since the betrayal that almost cost Lucas his life. He'd been beaten and thrown off a cliff while his lady love, Katherine, watched. He's recovered from his injuries and worked hard to rebuild his body to its battle ready condition - and now he's ready to enact revenge and prove himself worthy of being the heir to Donncoill.

Katherine almost lost her life that fateful day as well. She's mourned Lucas's death and tried to carry on the best she can under harsh circumstances. Katherine has allowed all but a few trusted friends to believe that she's dead while she secretly battles against her half-sister, Agnes, and her henchman's plot to obtain all of Dunlochan.

The laird, Katherine's father, stipulated before his death that a council of five men must approve Katherine's or Agnes's choice of husband. If they disapprove and she marries him anyway, then she'll receive a small dowry and tiny plot of land. Lucas would have been approved by the council. Katherine has no doubt that Agnes is behind the attempted murders of Lucas and herself. She's ecstatic when she learns that he's still alive and assumes that he'd know her well enough to know that she would have never wanted any harm to come to him.

Lucas has spent a whole year nurturing his anger and broken heart, will he be able to accept her word that she wasn't involved in the attempt on his life? Regardless of how he feels about her now, it's obvious that they're fighting the same enemy - joining forces makes more sense than fighting alone. Lucas admits to himself that he's still very much in love with Katherine, but will that be enough to build on now that he's scared to trust her again?

I love a good Scottish Highlander story and Hannah Howell's HIGHLAND SAVAGE definitely kept me flipping pages to find out what would happen next. Lucas is everything I've come to expect in Scottish heroes. He's daring, brave, sexy and is willing to fight for what he believes is right. I was very impressed by Katherine's determined spirit and the ingenious way she's hiding out right beneath Agnes's nose. Together, I just knew that Lucas and Katherine would be a force to be reckoned with and I cheered each of their triumphs.

Revenge and Trust in the Scottish Highlands

This book starts, rather strangely, part-way through the plot. In the first few pages we disocver that Hero and Heroine had previously met offstage, had a romance, become lovers and then had a Big Misunderstanding which meant each thought the other dead and the man thought the lady had betrayed him. When this story starts, these events are a year in the past and the man, Lucas Murray, is returning to the village where the woman Katerina Haldane betrayed him to have his revenge on her (in some unspecified way as he's not a man to do violence to women). When he discovers she died on the same day that she betrayed him he doesn't know quite what to do but then almost instantly he runs into trouble and is rescued by... you've guessed it... the woman who died a year ago.

Lucas instantly accuses her of turning her back on him and thus we start Phase II of the Big Misunderstanding, this time being detailed for the reader rather than as backstory. I was rather concerned that this plot device would run through the whole book but fortunately Lucas discovers the truth when, most fortuitously, he happens to be listening at a peephole to his enemies discussing their future plans and they just happen to talk about the events a year ago and lay the whole truth out for Lucas's greedy ears. How convenient, but unfortunately for this reader it felt like an incredibly lazy author's plot device which wasn't believable. But of course it didn't completely solve the Big Misunderstanding as although Lucas now knows he was mistaken he has very much hurt Katerina and he has to ask her for forgiveness. Sadly it appears that, for Lucas, apologising is about as easy as trying to nail jelly to the ceiling.

We are told right from the start who the baddies are - Agnes, Katerina's half-sister who rather fancied Lucas herself but was rejected, and Ranald, an uncouth and violent man who wants to marry Agnes so that he can become Laird. At the moment the Council who choose the Laird will not accept Agnes as her husband Robbie is unsuitable (and also missing, he ran away when he realised how awful Agnes was); if they knew that Katerina was alive and if she married Lucas the Council would almost certainly confirm her as Laird, thus the original attempted murders of Lucas and Katerina a year ago. Now the two are back together (or at least in proximity to each other) Agnes and Ranald mean to try again to murder them, and with more success. Can Lucas and Katerina survive, can they keep the people safe, can they forgive each other etc etc? This is a formulaic book and there are few surprises but the story moves along reasonably well and there's a plot underpinning it, not something one always finds in this kind of book. For some reason it continued on a couple of chapters further than strictly necessary after the main plot had finished; this was presumably to give a more rounded view of the love story but it felt rather superfluous to me.

I'm never entirely convinced by books with Scottish dialect. "Weel, mon, ye isnae stupid..." just reads uncomfortably to me. This book is littered with that kind of speech and it can become a little trying after a while. However the author is able to catch a little of the feeling of life in those times in the harshness of Scotland and the way in which the clans and families cared for each other. Despite its good points this book is probably one for fans of Hannah Howell rather than new readers, particularly because of the strange way in which the book starts partway through the story of Lucas and Katerina because it is part of a series.
