A Tale of Tournai

Legends tell of large cats defending the principality of Tournai, but such creatures have been lost to time.

Or have they?

Prince Philip inherited the throne at a young age, and since then, his life has centered around ruling his country and resisting those pressuring him to take a wife and conceive an heir—forcing him to hide his attraction to men. When kind-hearted Amory is offered to the prince in exchange for more time for Amory’s father to complete a commission, both Philip and Amory are horrified. But Philip agrees to keep Amory at the palace, where they gradually become friends, then lovers. For the first time in his life, Philip is free to share not only his heart, but the magical shape-shifting ability that runs in the royal bloodline.

Neither Amory nor Philip imagined falling in love, and they certainly don’t expect the lengths those who oppose their relationship will go to keep them apart—maybe even resorting to murder.

A Surprise Worthwhile
By ShinyNickel
** READER WARNING: At the end of my review (there will be a warning before it appears) is a mild spoiler but I feel it should have been mentioned in the description as it is a very surprising/polarizing addition to the story that may affect your wish to continue. Personally, it was an appreciated addition that I would have enjoyed seeing more heavily featured and to me, was the best part of the storyline**

3.5 Stars

"The Prince's Consort" was something of a boredom-fueled purchase- I'd never read anything by this author before nor was I exactly overcome with the "must-read-right-now"s by the summary. But, it was a Dreamspinner's Press book and I've found they are consistently satisfying...so, I went all impulsive and gave it a shot (yessss, revel in my rebel spirit!).

And, I am glad I did.

It isn't a flawless book, but it was super enjoyable. The MCs, Prince Philip and Amory, are very likeable. No secret pasts or dramatic dark sides lurking about, and against-all-odds they are both genuine, honest and faithful individuals. It's an instant relationship that burns gently into devotion and love. There is sex, but just like our heroes, it is pretty tame.

It does run a bit long and seems to suffer a bit of an identity issue- is it a romance? Definitely. A shifter story? Barely. Magical with sorcerers and the like? Surprisingly. A crime mystery? Yeah, but a pretty obvious one. That isn't to say a book can't contain so many elements and be successful, but it sometimes felt like things were added to further along the plot, like more of a device rather than an organic progression. Even being aware of this, I liked it. It needed a clearer understanding of its own intended plan, but it didn't truly take away from liking it. Basically, I'm looking forward to the next book. Maybe by then the author will have hit her stride, defined her objective and stuck to it.

Also, I felt it was strange how Amory's father's ambition was the catalyst to Philip and Amory meeting one another and yet his storyline was never realized. He made one half hearted effort of being a big bad and then sort of chickened out...I guess it's just another example of all these half formed tangents.

*Now the spoiler and my favorite element*

So, this is an mpreg story- you know, dudes who have babies. For some absolutely unknown reason, I relish these so I was stunned AND thrilled to find it in "The Prince's Consort." I think part about what is so appealing about mpreg books are that they are radical and racy, but also that they imbue the character with a mixture of vulnerability and strength that is titillating and touching. And, sadly, a good mpreg m/m book is the rarity. For the most part, this is one of the rare ones.

So, in this, the author was tremendously successful. She presented an entirely plausible scenario for how such a thing could occur and even why it should. It resolved many issues for our MCs and made me insanely happy. So, yeah. This was good stuff.

A few things...
By Em
So, let me first by saying that this book is closer to a 3.5 than a 3, but I did not like it enough to give it a 4 star rating. While I did enjoy this book enough to read and finish, there were certain issues I had, actually several issues I had that made warranted the 3 star rating.

1. The instalove. And not just "maybe I love him, maybe I don't" instalove. It was like Phillip met Amory and then decided he needed to be with him. Willing to anger his family, and possibly dishonor his name for a complete stranger? I'm sorry. But no. Then Amory decides within the first day after deciding to be a complete strangers lover that he has to make their relationship work in order to be there for Prince so he won't be lonely anymore. Really? REALLY? Never mind the fact that Amory actually states that he's in love with Armory 3 weeks later. By the time Philip asked Amory to marry him I'd already accepted these two were delusional.

2. The pacing. So, usually when an author sets a pace, they're consistent. Not the case here. We went from a day to day play by play, to skip a few weeks, to skip a few months, to back to day to day. Maddening. I wouldn't mind it so much if long periods of time were covered. But this books covers a year's time span. LITERALLY. They met, had sex, mosied around for like 3 months and then Philip was asking Amory to marry him. Days later they were talking about children. Ok. Sure.

3. The m-preg. I actually enjoy reading m-preg. It's something that isn't done very often or very well, so when I see a book with a decent star rating, I take a chance and purchase. While the reason behind the m-preg was plausible in the magical world, the pacing during the actual pregnancy was so warped I barely had time to blink and the baby was born. I guess what I'm saying is, there wasn't much of an actual pregnancy. I thought, okay, well maybe she'll let us see some family life once the baby is here. Nope. Fade to black as they're holding the baby together for the first time. Sweet, but not fulfilling as far as an m-preg is concerned. At least not for me.

There are many good things about the novel as well. The characters were interesting. The side affair between Tristan and Philip's cousin intrigued me as well. I liked the easy relationship the characters had. No over the top agnst. I usually like novels with sexually explicit scenes, but honestly, the writing was so fluffy I was glad they were glossed over. Most of the adversity came from the outside rather than within. I usually read more dramatic romances, but this was light, cute and fluffy. Read it in two days though I probably could have finished sooner had the pacing been better, but I still enjoyed it.

Incredibly romantic and imaginative!
By Amazon Customer
A beautiful love story in an imaginative kingdom! This is the most romantic romance (if that makes sense!) I've read in quite some time--candles, castles, gorgeous rides through the countryside--all the good stuff! Phillip and Amory fight to overcome the social obstacles presented by those around them while their love deepens. This couple is absolutely dedicated to one other and have the kind of relationship most of us can only dream of. :)
