Loved it!

I found this very helpful having recently suffered a heartbreak. It helped me to see where I went wrong in the relationship and where my partner fell short. Funny, light-hearted, and to the point. Some great advice here. Gives me hope for my future relationships. Great read for both men and women, written from a male perspective.

I just had a pretty painful breakup, figured out that I was the reason the relationship needed to end and decided I really need to work on myself. Working on getting through the break up and either moving on or trying again with her after I find a new version of myself I'm actually happy with, in the end I need to be more open and adult with my relationships. Adult not meaning sexually but being mature and respectful and being partners instead of trying to become one person. This book is a compilation of writing pieces that offers view points on relationships that we all know but some we refuse to listen too. A nice short read that will leave you thinking about how you approach relationships and how you construct bonds with the people around you. Plus it's cheap, so why not read it?

About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation. Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean's Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School's finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California. Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and Gatton Research Fellow in the Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. He has a long-standing interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance, and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. Professor Jordan has published numerous articles on issues such as cost of capital, capital structure, and the behavior of security prices.

Stuningly bad book! A terrible Kindle execution also.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is a jumble. I can't find my way through chapters logically, let alone see the logical flow of the book as a whole. It claims to have electronic links to things like spreadsheets and videos...it does not. All the links are dead. The publisher's website promises tons of content, and there's virtually nothing, and what is there is just fluff, not of any real use.

And finally, the book is not updated in any meaningful way since the 8th edition (I compared it in the library). Literally all they did was tweak the number in the problem section so you don't get the same answers. Every word of the text is verbatim, except for some very minor changes (they refer to different baseball players' salaries, or sales of expensive art auction items). So they published a "new" edition not cause there's new information, or to update the content in keeping with the 2008-present recession, or anything else of academic merit. The changes are basically cosmetic, in order to sell more books. Putting out a new edition was not just unnecessary, it was evil.

As for the Kindle execution...first, no page numbers. All books of this sort need literal page numbers, so that kindle users can follow along with the rest of the class. then, they only let you use it on two devices. One of the beauties of Kindle books is that you can bounce from device to device; your phone, your iPad, your laptop, your desktop and home and work, your Kindle, the new Kindle you had to buy because the old one got stolen, the new Kindle you bought because the newer models just came out...you get my drift. NOT with this book! You're limited to two devices. TWO! Utterly ridiculous.

In sum, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you have to, plead to get a used copy of the 8th edition, you'll learn every bit as much. What might be missing can be found on the web. Teachers...if you must assign it to students, at least have the courtesy to let students us an older edition, since the 8th is exactly the same book.

Excellent text

We use this book for both the undergraduate Intermediate Finance and MBA Introduction to Finance courses at University of Central Florida. This book is very easy to read no what your background in finance is. It serves as an excellent reference as well.
It seems there are a few people here who try to counterbalance each review that is awarded a 5-star rating with one that is a 1-star rating although their arguments do not hold water. My suggestion is to take a look at this book for yourself and simply return it if you're not happy with it. The fact the so many universities have adopted this text AND continue to use it says a lot.

This is THE book for serious study of corporate finance !

I am a student with science background. When I started my research on corporate finance, I had ZERO knowledge of investment and business ! I have tried very hard to swallow through the famous Bryley and Myers text recommended by my supervisor, and what I can conclude was : boy, is this how finance people write their text ? After beating about the bush for tens of pages, you still have no idea what they are talking about !
Thankfully this book by Ross and also another by Haim Levy save my day and correct my almost biased opinion about business academics (disorganized to the extent that can't even produce an honest and sincere introduction of finance with clarity and organized structure, that I sometimes wonder do these people know their work or not ?).
Really I don't know why some people discount Ross completely, because this is really one of the more decent and organized texts available about corporate finance. Anyone who wants to have serious learning about corporate finance should really take a look at Ross and also Haim Levy. Have patience and you will see where the author is leading you to. I am speaking from someone with ZERO background and experience in finance and business.

Excellent book for Clinical Pathology

I had the previous edition of this book (Quick Compendium) and found this to be quite the upgrade. The addition of pictures and highlighted text makes this book more user-friendly than its predecessor. I am impressed with the amount of information that is presented in a concise format. The material is very up to date but also includes the more outdated techniques that are frequently asked on board exams. Overall, I think its an excellent source for CP throughout residency, not just board review, and highly recommend it to to all pathology residents. Attendings that don't practice CP on a daily basis and would like to update their knowledge in the various CP fields would also find this book useful.

I ordered this thinking that I would be getting new information. I already have the Quick Compendium by the same author which I like. When I looked up a topic and compared it to the compendium, the information was copied almost word for word. I checked another topic--same conclusion. I like to make notes and add additional information in the margins of books that I use for review; this is not possible in this book because the pages are almost completely full of text with small margins. For the cost, this purchase was not worth the money, given that I already have the compendium. The pictures are not enough for me to justify the additional cost. If you don't have the compendium, this might be the preferred book for you.
Pros: some of the chapter's pictures are nice
Cons: same information as compendium, only in paragraph form rather than outline. No room in margins for notes.

i wish i would have bought this sooner

If you are looking at the clinical compendium, I would recommend this book first. It is the same information but in paragraph form, so easier to digest for a first time read through. There are errors in the book (most common cause of transfusion related mortality is still TRALI), but honestly I haven't found a review book that doesn't have them. Has been a great resource while studying for my boards, I wish I would have bought it sooner.

So far, so good...

I'm an avid reader and have ordered dozens of books through Amazon, but this is the first one I've taken the time to write a review for, because I believe this book can help others in the same situation I was.

I ordered this book when I was applying for Life Insurance, based on the investment strategy in Douglas Andrew's book, "Missed Fortune 101". I wanted to review another reference on life insurance to learn more about it, and to corroborate Andrews' strategy. This is the only other book I could find that discussed LI from a financial investment perspective. This is a very comprehensive book about LI. It's a large book, and so far I've only read portions, skipping around to the areas I needed to understand the type of policy I was applying for, and to justify in my mind that indeed it was the right one for me (I'm working with a financial planner who recommended a particular plan, and has largely focused his practice on Doug Andrews' strategy). This book gave me a lot of the information I needed to ask my agent questions about my policy. In fact, he was impressed with my questions and wanted the name of this book.

This is a very easy to read book, with plenty of *understandable* tables as examples. I have also found it to be very objective, discussing the tradeoffs of the different types of policies, and discussing in what personal situations a particular policy might be best. The intent of this book is clearly educational - there's no hidden agenda or bias that I can detect. The author has CFP, CLU, and CHFC credentials.

Finally, and very importantly, this author stresses the need to manage your life insurance policy over time, as you would any other investment - especially the flexible aspects of policies, and including, where necessary, 1035 transfers to a more appropriate policy.

This book is a must read, for anyone attempting to accumulate significant amounts of wealth and ample case reserves for a secure retirement. Once you grasp the full understanding of how best to pay for Life Insurance, the hardest part may be finding a qualified Financial Advisor to assist you over the long run. This is a long term arrangement, one that requires a long term Advisor, to assist you in doing what most people are not capable of doing....accumulating wealth. The book will also be a guide to refer back to, from time to time.

Great way to learn about insurance

The author did a geat job in explaining life insurance products. Those that have panned the book have a built in bias against insurance companies and their salesmen/woman. Fine, but I am waiting for one to write a cogent critique of why the author is wrong in his analysis. Frankly, I haven't found one financial services professional that can, even those that don't sale insurance products. Bottom line, the strategy makes sense for a many if not most folks who are trying to accumulate retirement $$. And yes the insurance industry makes good fees selling their products just like the securities companies make great fees with their products whether they are indexed mutual funds or stocks and bonds. I simply consider this the cost of doing business and move on. So what if someone makes some money helping you have a more comfortable retirement. Read it, take the ideas seriously, and incorporate the ideas into your plan. I have.

A Play by Play Tale of American Greed and Corporate Egotism

I consider myself a novice reader of financial dealings. I've read several books about investment banking, the real estate bubble burst, Enron, private equity firms, etc. With that said, this book was a easy read. I got the terms and lingo the authors were throwing around. What I didn't get, and only understood after getting to the end of the book, was why the authors spent so much time detailing events that ultimately didn't matter, or could have been edited out entirely. At times, the volleying back and forth seemed like I was reading an embellished newspaper article, not a novel. What I will say is that yet again, this book is a shining example of big egos getting in the way of what's best for the shareholders and the business model. I was left smacking myself in the forehead several times when I felt like the parties had come to a compromise, but watched it fall apart because some investment banker or lawyer got his feelings hurt because the details of the compromise weren't prominent enough or profitable enough for him to capitalize from.

good book for those with good financial knowledge.

There are a number of very positive reviews of this book.I don't doubt that they are honest reviews, however, unless you have a good understanding of the stock market and other forms of high finance you will not be able to enjoy this book to the fullest. In addition you will need the ability to retain an endless parade of investor names, lawyers and law firms, wall st. companies and wall st terms and concepts to fully understand the myriad of details in this book.

Overall I enjoyed the book, but I would not recommend it to someone like me who does not have a high degree of financial savvy.

No Real Heores

Reading this, my wife asked if I liked the book, and what it was about.

My quick answer was that it was the real life version of American Psycho.

Maybe that is too harsh a criticism. I know Ellis was mocking this milieu when he was writing his books in the late 80s and early 90s. He has a lot of crossover between characters in different situations, and shows how small the Wall Street world of the time was, but also how faceless. The only difference is that in this book there is not a lot of murders, real or imagined.

It actually took me a while to finish this book. I’m just young enough I don’t remember the RJR Nabisco buyout, and I had never heard of Ross Johnson before reading this book. My memory of Barbarians at the Gate was an advertisement for the movie on TV. Basically it took me a whole to read because there was no good guy to root for. Everyone had some weakness, and the narration didn’t construct the story of the buyout in such a way that it was the vindication of Kravis or the downfall of Johnson. It felt indifferent and impersonal – here’s a thing that happened. I don’t know if that was intentional by the authors or not. The one thing that really comes out from the book is that the whole LBO or private equity industry looks bad.

I think the authors wanted to show how bad the LBO industry was. If that was the goal, they succeeded. It did die down for a while. But the real funny thing is that the amounts that are supposed to seem obscene now seem tiny after the financial crisis. I’m not going to a 1989 inflation calculator to get the real terms of the buyout, but 25 Billion in nominal terms just seems small. The authors touch on this in the afterward.

The short-termism and the greed that are illustrated here are still in play on Wall Street. Kravis is still doing buyouts. The names of some of the firms have changes. The suits look a bit different. The securities laws have been amended.

The barbarians still wait.

Loved this book!

As someone with a chronic illness, I found Jill's struggle to manage MS and remain as independent as possible well drawn and realistic. I enjoyed this story very much. It is easily the best book of the series.

Jae really raised the bar with this one. Not only is it her best work to date, this book truly highlights her attention to detail. Her vast amount of research is apparent from the start and the realism she gives to MS as well as the caretaker roll is breathtaking. Once you start reading you will not be able to put it down!

Loved this book. If I wasn't already engaged, I'd totally marry one of the characters. I liked this book a lot. Loved the stunt scenes. Can tell that he author did some research... or is a stuntwoman herself. You can't go wrong with any of her books.
