A good story, but much longer than it should have been. Many chapters repeated the same ideas.

Lucas is on the hunt for revenge against the people who tried to murder him a year ago. He is devastated that one of those people is the woman he had loved so deeply, but he's determined not to let his emotions stop him. When he is attacked from all sides by the same group who tried to murder him before, Katerina and her band of renegades race into the fight to save him. Although he is reluctant to believe Katerina's claims of innocence, Lucas decides to work with Katerina and her men to get revenge on the people who have stolen her castle... the same people who thought they had beaten him to death a year ago. Katerina is determined to convince Lucas that she took no part in that plot to kill him. Lucas is determined to find the truth. Despite their differences, Lucas and Katerina can't deny their hunger for each other.

Hannah Howell's books tend to run either hot or cold. This one was lukewarm. I liked the fact that the story took place in a unique setting. Throughout most of the book, they are living in underground caves. A nice switch from the usual castle scenery. Also, the hero and heroine are both strong, but they are not written to be invincible. Both suffered physical and emotional injuries in their pasts and during the story itself.

Unfortunately, Hannah Howell tends to drag out the "He doesn't really love me."/ "She doesn't really love me." theme in her books. This one took it to an extreme. Lucas spends weeks next to Katerina's bed while fighting to keep her alive as she is racked with fever from injuries, but she can't decide if he really cares. Katerina rides into a sword fight to take Lucas to safety, but he's sure she doesn't really love him. After the villains are killed, there are actually 4 whole chapters spent on dragging out the idea that Lucas and Katerina each think the other doesn't really care. I skimmed the last 3 chapters, but I could tell I didn't miss anything when I read the epilogue.

You just gotta love a Highlander story!

It's been a year since the betrayal that almost cost Lucas his life. He'd been beaten and thrown off a cliff while his lady love, Katherine, watched. He's recovered from his injuries and worked hard to rebuild his body to its battle ready condition - and now he's ready to enact revenge and prove himself worthy of being the heir to Donncoill.

Katherine almost lost her life that fateful day as well. She's mourned Lucas's death and tried to carry on the best she can under harsh circumstances. Katherine has allowed all but a few trusted friends to believe that she's dead while she secretly battles against her half-sister, Agnes, and her henchman's plot to obtain all of Dunlochan.

The laird, Katherine's father, stipulated before his death that a council of five men must approve Katherine's or Agnes's choice of husband. If they disapprove and she marries him anyway, then she'll receive a small dowry and tiny plot of land. Lucas would have been approved by the council. Katherine has no doubt that Agnes is behind the attempted murders of Lucas and herself. She's ecstatic when she learns that he's still alive and assumes that he'd know her well enough to know that she would have never wanted any harm to come to him.

Lucas has spent a whole year nurturing his anger and broken heart, will he be able to accept her word that she wasn't involved in the attempt on his life? Regardless of how he feels about her now, it's obvious that they're fighting the same enemy - joining forces makes more sense than fighting alone. Lucas admits to himself that he's still very much in love with Katherine, but will that be enough to build on now that he's scared to trust her again?

I love a good Scottish Highlander story and Hannah Howell's HIGHLAND SAVAGE definitely kept me flipping pages to find out what would happen next. Lucas is everything I've come to expect in Scottish heroes. He's daring, brave, sexy and is willing to fight for what he believes is right. I was very impressed by Katherine's determined spirit and the ingenious way she's hiding out right beneath Agnes's nose. Together, I just knew that Lucas and Katherine would be a force to be reckoned with and I cheered each of their triumphs.

Revenge and Trust in the Scottish Highlands

This book starts, rather strangely, part-way through the plot. In the first few pages we disocver that Hero and Heroine had previously met offstage, had a romance, become lovers and then had a Big Misunderstanding which meant each thought the other dead and the man thought the lady had betrayed him. When this story starts, these events are a year in the past and the man, Lucas Murray, is returning to the village where the woman Katerina Haldane betrayed him to have his revenge on her (in some unspecified way as he's not a man to do violence to women). When he discovers she died on the same day that she betrayed him he doesn't know quite what to do but then almost instantly he runs into trouble and is rescued by... you've guessed it... the woman who died a year ago.

Lucas instantly accuses her of turning her back on him and thus we start Phase II of the Big Misunderstanding, this time being detailed for the reader rather than as backstory. I was rather concerned that this plot device would run through the whole book but fortunately Lucas discovers the truth when, most fortuitously, he happens to be listening at a peephole to his enemies discussing their future plans and they just happen to talk about the events a year ago and lay the whole truth out for Lucas's greedy ears. How convenient, but unfortunately for this reader it felt like an incredibly lazy author's plot device which wasn't believable. But of course it didn't completely solve the Big Misunderstanding as although Lucas now knows he was mistaken he has very much hurt Katerina and he has to ask her for forgiveness. Sadly it appears that, for Lucas, apologising is about as easy as trying to nail jelly to the ceiling.

We are told right from the start who the baddies are - Agnes, Katerina's half-sister who rather fancied Lucas herself but was rejected, and Ranald, an uncouth and violent man who wants to marry Agnes so that he can become Laird. At the moment the Council who choose the Laird will not accept Agnes as her husband Robbie is unsuitable (and also missing, he ran away when he realised how awful Agnes was); if they knew that Katerina was alive and if she married Lucas the Council would almost certainly confirm her as Laird, thus the original attempted murders of Lucas and Katerina a year ago. Now the two are back together (or at least in proximity to each other) Agnes and Ranald mean to try again to murder them, and with more success. Can Lucas and Katerina survive, can they keep the people safe, can they forgive each other etc etc? This is a formulaic book and there are few surprises but the story moves along reasonably well and there's a plot underpinning it, not something one always finds in this kind of book. For some reason it continued on a couple of chapters further than strictly necessary after the main plot had finished; this was presumably to give a more rounded view of the love story but it felt rather superfluous to me.

I'm never entirely convinced by books with Scottish dialect. "Weel, mon, ye isnae stupid..." just reads uncomfortably to me. This book is littered with that kind of speech and it can become a little trying after a while. However the author is able to catch a little of the feeling of life in those times in the harshness of Scotland and the way in which the clans and families cared for each other. Despite its good points this book is probably one for fans of Hannah Howell rather than new readers, particularly because of the strange way in which the book starts partway through the story of Lucas and Katerina because it is part of a series.

About the Author

Jesper Str�mb�ck is Professor in media and communication and Lubbe Nordstr�m Professor and Chair in journalism at Mid Sweden University. He is also director at the Centre for Political Communication Research there. His research specialties include political news coverage, political campaigning and political marketing, and the news coverage of wars and crises. He has published more than ten books as well as articles in scholarly journals.

Lynda Lee Kaid is Professor of telecommunication in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida. Her research specialties include political advertising and news coverage of political events. She has also done work on political television in several Western European countries. She is the author/editor of more than 25 books and has written more than 150 journal articles and book chapters.

About the Author

Alanna Collen is a science writer with a master's degree in biology from Imperial College London and a PhD in evolutionary biology from University College London and the Zoological Society of London. She is a well-travelled zoologist, an expert in bat echolocation, and an accidental collector of tropical diseases. During her scientific career, Collen has written for the Sunday Times Magazine, as well as about wildlife for ARKive.org. She has appeared on both radio and television, including BBC Radio 4's The Tribes of Science and Saturday Live, and BBC One's adventure-wildlife show Lost Land of the Volcano. She lives in Bedfordshire, England, with her husband.

Well written and interesting, but a little overblown

Interest in the microbes that live in our bodies is getting greater and greater. I've read a few books on the subject, from The Good Gut: Taking Control of Your Weight, Your Mood, and Your Long-term Health by two Stanford University researchers (who are married to each other) and Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues by one of the leading researchers in the field. I've avoided reading a couple of other books that seemed to be written by bandwagon jumpers like Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain -for Life by David Perlmutter.

This book, 10% Human, is not written by a leading researcher, or even a scientist working in the field of microbes. But Alanna Collen is a British science writer, and a gifted one. She writes well. And she's no bandwagon jumper. She's done her research, having interviewed a variety of people and collected some interesting photographs (including one disturbing one of a smallpox patient that seems to jump out at me every time I open the book), and she brings her experience from getting a PhD in evolutionary biology and also from suffering as a patient from years of microbial infections to bear on this topic.

Given the great writing and the author's gift for explaining complex subjects simply yet fully, I give the book five stars and recommend it to anyone interested in the topic. But I also have a couple of complaints.

First, I think it's a little overblown. We're not just 10% human. Yes, if you count the number of cells in our body, only about 10% of them are human cells. But that percentage is misleading. Most microbes are tiny compared to human cells. So even if 90% of our cells are not human, that's still just about 1 to 2% of our body weight, enough to fill maybe a large soup can. By far the bulk of these bacteria inhabit our guts, where they live short lives and once dead make up about 50% of the weight of human, umm, what's the best word for it, I guess, stool.

That makes the 10% human figure as misleading as the idea that we only use 10% of our brains. That's a poor way to think of things. You can go overboard when you think that way, going beyond the science to say things like: "It [the human microbiome] has enormous implications for the sense of self," Tom Insel, the director of the National Institute of Mental Health, told a New York Times reporter. "We are, at least from the standpoint of DNA, more microbial than human. That's a phenomenal insight and one that we have to take seriously when we think about human development."

Sure, we should take the human microbiome seriously. But we should also be careful not to go beyond what science tells us to speculate without being cautious not to go beyond what we know. That temptation is strong, and I think the author came close to succumbing. As one of the top researchers in the field said: "‘My main fear is the hype is running ahead of the science.’’

The other thing about the book was that some drawings looked a little amateurish. Coming to Life: How Genes Drive Development spoiled me a bit in that regard, since the author of that book, a German woman scientist who won a Nobel Prize, not only wrote the book but drew fantastic drawings to illustrate it.

But all books have their faults. This book I recommend in spite of them.

Well-written, interesting, important information.

Wonderful! This book is amazing. Well-written and informative. Those who are squeamish about their innards might cringe at some of this book's descriptions. However, it imparts important information about how much of our health, or illness, is affected not by our genes, but by all the myriad microbes that inhabit various parts of our external and internal parts. And, how changes to the balance of these microbes can affect our well-being. Especially important is information about the cost/benefit of antibiotics, given directly to us, and those ingested by us unknowingly through eating animals routinely given antibiotics to bulk them up, and vegetables grown in soils whose microbe composition is changed by the use of fertilizers. For every benefit, there is a price to be paid. Some of the twenty-first century ailments discussed are obesity, autism, and auto-immune disease, and how the increase in these ailments follows the increased use of antibiotics, and how changes to our gut can be long term and deleterious. After reading this, I will be thinking twice before ingesting antibiotics. Necessary, perhaps, at times, but not necessarily benign.

Great book and a Fascinating topic!

First, let me say that I usually don’t give 5 stars (look at my other reviews) when giving a review; so this should give you a good indication of how much I liked this book. I have read a lot of material on the latest advances in medicine and through this material, I learned a little about the importance of the microbes in a person’s intestines; however, until reading this book, I had no idea about why they were so important. I was frankly amazed at how many diseases could possibly be caused by an imbalance in the diversity of these microbes. Obesity, diabetes, mental illnesses were all addressed in this book, showing how they all may be caused by this imbalance. Of particular note, I was amazed at the connection to autism and the antibiotics that could very well contribute to it. Many of the facts I found so amazing that I had to do further research on the internet. My research did not find anything which would contradict what I read in the book.
Great book which I would highly recommend for anyone interested on microbes, the diseases listed above or even any expecting parents.

About the Author

Sakari Kouti, M.S. (Tech), is a senior trainer and consultant for Sovelto, the leading training company in Finland. He started working with networks in 1986 and his articles have appeared in Windows NT Magazine (now Windows and .NET Magazine). Sakari was one of the first MCSEs in the world back in 1994.

Mika Seitsonen is a senior trainer at Sovelto. His network experience spans more than ten years, and he was one of the first MCSE: Security on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 certified persons in the world. Mika was awarded MVP—Directory Services in 2004 and holds an M.S. (Tech) from University of Nottingham (U.K.) and Lappeenranta University of Technology (Finland).

During the seven years that Windows NT was sold, before Windows 2000 shipped, administrators had no need to learn anything new, at least about the core operating system features. User and group management, domains and domain models, as well as resource management, were the same in all Windows NT versions.

With the introduction of Windows 2000 and Active Directory, all that has changed. There is a huge difference between managing Windows networks and working with the old NT administration model. Therefore, Active Directory will require quite a leap in the learning process of existing NT professionals. Despite some administrative wizards in the user interface and the new Microsoft Management Console (MMC) administration interface, implementing and administering Active Directory probably requires more learning, testing, piloting, and planning than Windows NT needed.

This book is an implementer's and administrator's guide to Active Directory. By reading it, you will discover the workings, architecture, administration, and planning of Active Directory. Your level of experience will dictate whether you read this book cover-to-cover, or select only the chapters and sections appropriate to your needs. The following list evaluates the appropriateness of the book for each target audience:

Current NT professionals
You are the foremost target audience for this book. You may not need the introductory notes that preface each chapter, but will use the majority of the content to make the leap from the Windows NT environment to Active Directory.

Current NetWare or UNIX professionals

Absolutely the Best Single Book on AD

Quite simply it is the best guide to Active Directory in a single book. The quality of writing is superb, it has the benefit of appearing a couple of years after the release of W2K and you can tell that the authors know their subject. I found information in this book that I have never seen anywhere else (like what AdminSDHolder does)! A direct competitor to this book would be Alistair G. Lowe-Norris "Windows 2000 Active Directory" but IMHO that book does not have the benefit of 2 years experience in the real-world.
Highlights are the chapters on AD security, replication, schema management and group policy. There are also two superb chapters on ADSI scripting.
However, there are some things it doesn't cover (wisely in my opinion as it would become too large). Specifically it does not cover migration or deployment planning. It also does not cover DNS planning in depth. These topics are large enough to require books on their own.
All in all if you want serious in-depth technical detail on managing AD, explained clearly and precisely (rare qualities in technical books) then this is the book to go for.

Excellent Resource for Administrators and Developers

There really is something to be said about second editions. The kinks have been worked out and the authors have just that much more experience to enrich the new text with. Refreshingly this title also doesn't assume that you have forgotten the existence of operating systems less than 2003 or that your experience is only within the Windows World; throughout the text are clue-ins for Windows NT administrators as well as those with a Novell background (both types displayed as bonus text and if you have experience in neither, you don't miss a thing). Without a doubt, if you are in charge of any aspect of the Active Directory (AD) - this is a must have.

It is amazing in what is included in this book. For administrators there is the most comprehensive overview of the AD you could want, covering everything from domain planning to single AD object creation. Included with general text are graphics and summary tables, so you're never having to dig for that needed quip of information you're just sure you read 50 pages back. Like to see the tie-in between the interface and where the data is stored in the registry, file system, or schema? It's in there. A bonus for administrators are chapters dedicated to topics such as LDAP/LDAP Searches, new Microsoft RSK utilities relating to AD and Group Policies, and even an administrative scripting overview with samples (not a scripting tutorial, and not all-inclusive of ADSI, but an excellent introduction and possibility revealer). For developers (and admins alike), everything you would want to know about the schema, from explanation of the schema and classes to extending the schema, is very well documented and demonstrated.

Unlike some titles where the information is a rehash of Microsoft White Papers, on-line help, or the authors own initial discoveries while learning the previously unknown system, it is crystal clear that the authors know the AD inside and out and have refined the presented experience in a very concise and easy to read manner. Anyone who must administer the AD should read this book - regardless of experience. Long after you've discovered new aspects you didn't know existed, this title will server as an excellent reference.

It's all in here...

I have an extensive library already on Active Directory. When I first got my hands on this book I wanted to test it out, see if it was worth adding to my collection. So I played a little game, I thought of things that should be in here, then looked in the book to see if they were there. This treasure hunt went on for a while consistently finding that the topics that should be in here are in here... So I switched tack, I started to read the index and see what I wouldn't expect to be in, if it was I'd be impressed... I was and am very impresses. Very soon I was hooked, this book really does explain the answers to many questions that commonly come up. There's a lot of books out there that explain Active Directory, but few that answer those nitty-gritty questions. This is one that does! Even if you've got a bookshelf full of AD books, check this out, it's a must... Well done Sakari and Mita..

Amazing storytelling and art work.

The Read Aloud Bible Story series is amazing. If you don't own these and you teach Bible class or have young children, you need the whole set. It is money well spent. I've had these for over 20 years and have used them multiple times. You can tell that the author is a person who has told Bible stories to young children for years. The artwork to go along with the stories is wonderful. Perfect for preschoolers, but even elementary aged children will be engaged with a wonderfully told story.

disappointing

We have the first four volumes, and they're wonderful, both as read-to stories for little ones and first readers for those who are learning to read. This volume is very different; the stories are in more stilted language and don't make quite as much sense. I was quite disappointed with this volume, but I would highly recommend the first four volumes for kids ages 2-8 (even my 10- and 12-year old enjoy them!)

Little Ones Love Them!

Purchased this book along with the other volumes. I was not sure how my children would take to the books. To my surprise they gravitated to them on the first reading. The size of the book (12in. x 8in.) along with the colorful pages give appeal to the little ones. The biblical messages are geared to toddlers simple yet effective. I recommend this series. Well worth the purchase.
